My D145 HP all in one Officejet doesn't recognise new colour cart

My D145 HP all in one Officejet doesn't recognise I have put in new colour cartridge. I keep getting message to replace cartridge. I have tried different one's to ensure I wasn't using a faulty one. I have cleaned the connectors using a cotton but dipped in water and almost dry. I don't know what else to try.

    It could have been helpful but referred to a printer with several cartridges, mine has a combined colour cartridge and I have tried full new HP cartridge and a refill cartridge, cleaned the terminals and now have exhausted all my options. Thanks anyway to robert for trying to help, but unless he can offer advice re: just one combined colour and one black cartridge, I don't think I will get it working.

Hi penned2you, when you say that you have installed new colour cartridge, is it a new refilled cartridge or an original from the manufacturer? cause if it is refilled then most of the time depending on the level of ink that was in it... the printer will not accept it, when you say you have tried different ones, do you mean different empties that were in there before? cause if it is then the printer will not accept them either. to get them to be accepted you have first know that the printer stores 3 cartridges in memory and so you have to let it read for eg. the colour catridge #i, then #2 then #3, after cartidge #3 is inserted then colour #1 will now be accepted. the same goes for the black if you're using original cartridges then these steps dont apply... the only thing i know of to rectify the problem is to clean the printer cartridge contacts and then cleaning the carriage contacts. if done correctly it should work. if not then give me some more info on your situation, casue i would suspect that the printer itself maybe damaged (if it is infact you have inserted more than one different new original cartridges) if these intructions helped in any way please rate it and also to let me know how it turns out.

Use a Q-Tip and isopropyl alcohol to very gently clean the gold contacts on the cartridge and the contact fingers on the print head. be careful to not snag a finger contact with the Q-tip fibers.

Is the colour cart being recognised?

You will need to tell the software that you have installed a new one, if its failing to recognise it which is very rare indeed then you will need to buy a new one, if its recognised but wont print, then either the print head is blocked or the cart is empty

You can check to see if the printhead is blocked, get a piece of tissue paper and wet it, take colour cart & put it onto the wet tissue and dab the printhead a few times, you should get 3 nice little blocks.

If you dont keep trying for upto around 12 times.

If you don't get the colours then its either empty very likely or faulty.

Replace it with a new one

Have just replaced the colour ink but getting message to replace. It doesn't recognise there is one in.


If you used a generic brand cartridge, you might try an original HP replacement. I have had many HP printers for service that don't work well with the remanufactured cartridges.

If the new cartridge is an HP, try exchanging it as defective where you purchased it. You probably got a defective cartridge. (Hey, it happens occasionally!)

Not printing


try the cleaning cycle again and see if it gets and darker.
also try a test print as these utilise all colours and may help clear out any blockages.

HP Officejet d145 print head problem


Did you replace the PRINTHEAD, or did you replace the INK CARTRIDGE? They are not the same on the D145.

Good chance that you may have replaced the ink cartridge, not the magenta PRINTHEAD which sits under the ink cartridge.

PS - in my experience, non-HP ink cartridges clog up HP printers with separate printhead mechanisms... any possibility here?

Out off ink


When you say the 'ink has been changed do you mean colour or black only. It does not matter what you are trying to print the printer must have a full set to function, If you have a full set remove the cartridge[s]. Switch off the printer wait 30 seconds switch on put the cartridge carrier to its proper position and reload the carts Further info from www.fixyourownprinter.com
