Question about Porter Cable Air Tools & Compressors

Open Question

Porter cable C2005 type 3 compressor

What valve do I replace? Once the tank is full and the motor automatically cuts off. I don't hear a short spurt of air being released. Releasing this pressure means that the motor is able to restart easily because there is no load. What part number do I need?

SOURCE: Air leakage through pressure switch needle

1)Let your unit pump up.
2)Turn it off.
3)Find the supply line from the pump to the tank.
4)Remove the supply line from the pump head.
5a)If you hear air coming from the tank you have a bad check valve.
5b)If you do not hear air coming from the tank, you have a leaky
pressure switch.

SOURCE: Drain valve in Porter Cable air compressor

this valve works backwards, you screw it out to stop airflow. If that doesn't work, replace the valve.

SOURCE: Extra fitting on my Porter Cable?

The porter cable compressor is equipped with a pressure relief valve. Mine has a ring attached to it. When you pull out on the valve, it releases all the pressure stored in the tank. Try pushing that valve back in, or if faulty replace it.

SOURCE: pressure switch dows not shut off motor when

Pressure switch has gone bad and needs to be replaced. Part runs around $25. Go online and put in model number, pressure switch. You will find companies that sell replacement parts. I had to replace mind, it did the same thing.

SOURCE: why does my compreeor switch release the air after

There are two valves in play here. There is a relief valve that opens when the motor kicks off to release the pressure in the compressor itself. That is normal, and is required so that the motor can restart next time without having to overcome that pressure. The other valve is the problem. It is a reed valve between the compressor and the tank. This valve's job is to prevent the air in the tank from returning to the compressor. Think of it as a ratchet for the air. It is this reed valve that has failed.

My Porter Cable pancake air compressor is getting too hot and melting my air hose

ASSUMING THIS IS AN ELECTRIC MOTOR DRIVEN SINGLE STAGE COMPRESSOR, IF THE COMPRESSOR USES OIL IN THE CRANKCASE, THE PRESSURE SWITCH SHOULD CUT OFF AT 125 PSI AS THE ACT OF COMPRESSION HEATS THE AIR QUITE HOT. THERE IS ALWAYS SOME OIL THAT PASSED THE PISTON RINGS IN THE COMPRESSED AIR. IF THE COMPRESSED AIR GETS HOT ENOUGH, THE OIL VAPOR CAN IGNITE AND THE FLAME CAN CARRY TO THE TANK FOR AN IMPRESSIVE EXPLOSION. THIS ORDINARILY DOES NOT HAPPEN BELOW 175PSI OR MORE.

OILLESS COMPRESSORS CAN BE SET TO 150 PSI. WITH EITHER TYPE OF COMPRESSOR, THE HOSE SHOULD BE ATTACHED TO THE REGULATOR OR THE REGULATOR STACK, NEVER TO THE COMPRESSOR, AS THE COMPRESSED AIR LOSES MUCH OF ITS HEAT WHILE IN THE RECEIVER. IF THE WHOLE TANK IS GETTING HOT ENOUGH TO MELT A PROPERLY ATTACHED HOSE, YOU HAVE A DANGEROUS SITUATION, CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE PRESSURE SWITCH, UNLOADER VALVE AND RELIEF VALVE. THE RELIEF VALVE SHOULD OPEN AT NO MORE THAN 150 PSI, THE UNLOADER VALVE OPENS WHEN THE PRESSURE SWITCH SHUTS THE MOTOR OFF, AND SHOULD ONLY HISS FOR A FEW SECONDS AS IT DUMPS THE PRESSURE ONLY IN THE COMPRESSOR AND THE LINE FROM THE COMPRESSOR TO THE TANK INLET CHECK VALVE. IF THE UNLOADER VALVE HISSES MORE THAN A FEW SECONDS, THE TANK INLET CHECK VALVE IS LEAKING AND NEEDS TO BE SERVICED, CLEANED OR REPLACED. IF THERE IS CARBON BUILD UP IN THE VALVE, THERE IS EXCESS OIL PASSING THE COMPRESSOR PISTON RINGS, REPLACING THEM MIGHT FIX THAT IF THE CYLINDER OR RING LANDS ON THE PISTON ARE NOT TOO TAPERED OR WORN.

I have a porter cable 6 gallon compressor. The motor used to cut out at 150 psi, but now it cuts out at 135. Is this a faulty tank pressure gauge misreading the pressure or a motor cutting out too early

it could be your air pressure adjustment knob, where your air line hooks up, which controls the psi to a lower or highist seting to adjust for different tools and uses.

It sounds like the small valve that releases the pressure out of the main pipe that runs between the compressor and tank is not working once the tank is full and the motor automatically cuts off. You know this valve is working by the sound of a short spurt if air being released when the motor cuts off. Releasing this pressure means that the motor is able to restart easily because there is no load. If the valve is not releasing this air, the compressor is trying to start under full load which the motor is not capable of doing, hence the humming and popping of breakers due to a current overload as the motor tries to start. Motor burnout is possible if it keeps recurring.

This small release valve is attached to the Pressure control switch that switches the motor On & Off and usually has a small pipe going to it or is incorporated inside the Pressure Control Switch. If the valve appears to be working then it means that the Non-return valve on the input to the tank is not sealing properly and letting air back into the main pipe causing the compressor to start under load. Check both valves for correct operation and if not working properly, talk to the people you bought it from to have it repaired under warranty seeing that unit is brand new .

It sounds like the compressor is trying to start under load because there is a tightness in the pump itself or there is high pressure air in the line between the pump and tank There is a small valve that releases the pressure out of the main pipe that runs between the compressor and tank once the tank is full and the motor automatically cuts off. You know this valve is working by the sound of a short spurt if air being released when the motor cuts off. Releasing this pressure means that the motor is able to restart easily because there is no load. If the valve is not releasing this air, the compressor is trying to start under full load which the motor is not capable of doing, hence the slow running, overheating and popping of breakers due to a current overload as the motor tries to run up to normal peed.

Check both valves for correct operation and replace as necessary.

If all the air side checks out OK the check for low oil level and / or binding in the air pump main drive shaft.

I have a porter cale C5101 compressor. It hesitate to auto start when the pressure is low, always trip my circuit breaker.

What amp breaker do you have this hooked to. I would use no less than 15 amp ,preferrably a 20 amp. Next do you drain tank after use on a regular basis. If you don't moisture can build up inside tank and cause hard starting on automatic. If you need to drain tank there should be a drain valve on bottom of tank. try turning it counterclocwise with compressor off. If it dosen't turn that way try clockwise, air and moisture should drain. If you have alot of water in tank then shut valve and turn compressor on and bring to full pressure, then repeat draining procedure until no more water comes out. Hope this helps. Thank you

Porter cable compressor will not restart once it is under pressur

This is likely a bad check valve which is allowing pressure from the tank to leak thru back to the compressor. The compressor won't start because the compressor cylinder has air pressure on it.

The check valve is about the size and shape of a .410 shotgun shell -- it's in the copper line from the compressor to the tank.
