My 990 is making a clicking noise and will not turn off. I have to remove the batteries to turn it off.
Suandmarc is correct in that impact shock can cause this problem. My own 990 suffered this fate, and Nikon tech staff told me I would need the lens unit replaced, a part they still had in stock a/o 7/09. However, they were unable to repair my camera because it also required another part that has long been discontinued. In any case, it's cheaper to buy a functional replacement on eBay (thereby saving repair costs); I recently bought one for less than half of Nikon's quoted repair charge.
A common cause of continuous clicking is a malfunctioning auto-focus system. Typically, the focusing mechanism is trying to obtain image focus, but is unable to because the positioner cannot move the lenses into proper position. A camera which has been dropped or subjected to physical shock may exhibit this symptom, or the auto-positioner may just need repair or replacement.
If the positioner is actually physically ok, you should be able to switch to the manual focus mode to overide the auto system, and then follow manual focusing procedures to allow capture of an acceptable picture. If not, the positioner system will probably need attention.
