The most likely to be overheated the motor, or cut the cord.
for the first unplug the power supply and let it COLD, ALSO CAN SWITCH AUTOMATIC OVERHEATING or proving or proving MANUAL. for the second take the machine to an electrician to check out the cable.

If you have a rubber smell, then the belt is slipping, does the brush roll turn freely while holding the ends? If not then replace it, part #2036619, if it is ok, then the belt has strectched and is slipping under load, part # 2106679, Style 8.

SOURCE: belt on this vacuum

Take off the bottom plate covering the brush roll, take out the brush roll, check it to make sure the ends turn freely, the belt goes around the end of the brush roll, then stretch it to go over the motor shaft.

SOURCE: burning smell when vacuuming, not belt

Try turning the vacuum on and hold the base up so you can see if the roller is turning. Odds are it is not and what you smell is the belt burning (not literally). If the roller is not turning, look for anything that is binding it - after you have unplugged the power cord. Probably the roller head is not fully aligned with the retention lugs that hold it in place or the belt is not properly placed on the roller itself, or if it is a used model, hair and twine can get tangled in the roller and cause it to stop turning.

SOURCE: bissell lift off, brush won't move smell burning rubber belt fine

OK - so your brush roller is jammed. And yes, the belt is melting! Unplug the machine, remove the belt (you will need another new one anyway) then see if you can turn the roller by hand. If it turns freely without you doing anything else, then you may have put the new belt in incorrectly. However, you will probably find you can't turn it, or it's hard work (it should rotate freely). Remove the roller and check the bearings - there may well be something tangled up at one end of the roller. If you can get the roller rotating freely, all should be well.
Good luck

SOURCE: Bissell Lift-Off Turbo power outage

We experienced the same thing. There are several filters on the vacuum cleaner that need to be cleaned out regularly (monthly in the user's guide). But the reason ours was shutting down is a protective circuit that cuts power for 30 minutes to avoid burning up a motor when there is a clog. Our clog was in the hose on the back of the cannister. One end of it can be lifted out of the bottom. The other end locks into place on the top (by rotating the ring on the end of it). It is the path for the hair and debris to the bagless cannister. We found that the top end of that hose was clogged with hair preventing anything from going into the cannister. So if your cannister is not filling, that's probably your problem. Easy to remove the hose and it's only about 18" long, so find something to stick through it and force out all the clogged debris and hair. Good luck!

My vacuum makes a really loud noise when I turn it on. It was working and now it smells like something is burning. I check the belt- it looks ok.

The belt may look okay but it still can be stretched or worn and can be slipping on the motor shaft and thats why you have the burning smell. I would try changing the belt. Here is a link to the manual and a link to the belt you need:

I accidently sucked up a pen cap and it stopped working then it began smoking and the belt snapped??

Take the pen cap out of where it is stuck and replace the belt. Most likely the smoke was from the belt slipping around the gear and getting hot. Did the smoke smell like burning rubber?

Bissell won't turn on

the motor could be ceased up. do you hear a buzzing noise? if you dont hear a buzzing noise, turn it on for about 1 minute, unless it starts smelling hot or starts smoking. if nothing happens after that, try replacing the power cord.

Hi Pmob20,

Remove the brush and clean all the string or whatever may be trapped at the end edges of the brush.  This is usually the case with Bissel vacs, that string or fiber gets trapped at the ends of the brush assembly.
