Question about Mr. Heater Mr Heater Portable Buddy Propane Heater

1 Answer

Mr. Heater Portable Buddy: Pilot dies low then burns hot in a cycle. Eventually dies.

I have a Mr. Heater Portable Buddy connected to a full 20# cylinder. The flame on the pilot light goes through a continuous cycle where it nearly dies and then burns so hot that a small flame ball shoots up the top of the heater. It will go through this cycle continuously and then eventually the pilot flame will die down low enough that the heater thermocouple registers the lack of heat and the safety feature trips to off. I've been using the heater for about a month and the issue started about a week and a half ago. Now it does this so frequently that the cycles will lead to a turn off within 10 minutes of first operation. I've tried two different full 20# cylinders. Both were originally from a cylinder exchange but I've had the one refilled at a dealer and get the same issue from it. The dealer did mention that the tank was taking longer to fill than he would normally expect and suggested a potential issue with the tank top valve. Just today I cleaned out the pilot tube and thermocouple with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol. No carbon buildup in the pilot and only a little black from the thermocouple. I purchased an oil free hose to run from the tank to the heater but did not install a fuel filter. Could this be oil build up within the heater? Bad tank valves? Other ideas?

SOURCE: propane convection heater won't maintain full flame

Seems like the valve is not opening up fully or the adjustment is out of adjustment. Try adjusting the flame.

Big buddy Heater - 20 lb tanks won't keep pilot lit,

I had the same problem I called tech support and they said to turn the valve on the 20# cylinder on very slowly for the first 1/4 turn then all will be fine. There is an excessive flow check valve that causes restricted flow when the valve is opened quickly----------mine works fine now

When I press down and turn the know the pilot lights but as soon as you let up on the knob to turn it there is a click and the pilot light goes out.. This is on my Mr. Heater Big Buddy

When the pilot lights continue holding the button down for a full minute and then release. It should stay lit then to allow you to turn it to the on position. If the pilot will not stay lit after holding it for the full minute, then the thermocouple will need to be replaced.
Hope this helps.

When commected to 20 lbs tank the pilot light does not stay on; however, when connected to a 1 lb propane bottle everything works propertly. I have replaced the fuel filter, I have tried using different...

The new 20lb LPG cylinders now have what called an OPD Valve. Reconnect to a 20lb cylinder and turn the tank valve on very very slowly, This will help prevent the OPD Valve from locking up the heater's regulator. Your 1lb cylinder is not required to have this OPD Valve.

By the way, this happens quite frequently with LP Gas Portable Grills.

Pilot after a few minutes of operation flutters and slowly goes out. lil Buddy Heater

The thermocouple is bad or not aligned properly. It is the metal bar in front of the pilot light. This bar senses the heat put off by the pilot light. If it does not get hot it will not allow the gas to flow. You either need to align it so that it is in front of the pilot light and receives enough heat to allow the gas valve to operate or possibly the thermocouple has gone bad and needs replacing.

My heater keeps going out. full propane bottle , but it keeps shutting itsef off i have tried it both with 2 full cylinders , and a 20# bottle ,

look in back of the heater where the fuel nozzle goes. you will see a plate with a bunch of holes, the ignitor and the fan. also there is a little button with two wires on it. these wires connect to two spade terminals on the millivolt generator. its sensing bulb is near to the fuel nozzle. the other end with the gland nut goes into the main valve body. when the heater is on, the flame hits the millivolt generator and makes a very small DC voltage which goes through the little disk [an overload] then to the main valve solenoid. if the millivolt generator is good then there is a voltage at the main valve solenoid and it keeps the valve open. in your case it seems 1) the overload is open 2) the generator needs to be replaced. please go to desatech site and order a new generator.
