Although MP4's file structure is based on Apple's QuickTime technology, its data embedded in this MPEG-4 Part 14 file, like MPEG-4 Part 10 (known as H.264/MPEG-4 AVC), MPEG-4 Part 2, etc, causes a codec problem which doesn't work well with Apple products. As a result, if you'd like to play MP4 on QuickTime, you'd better convert MP4 to MOV on Mac first because the MOV container is the default format of Mac OS X and performs optimum compatibility with QuickTime.

Cant play downloaded video files on my windows xp laptop

Jenny stef t:
On page 77 of the user manual for your camera (click here for user manual), it states that the movie format is "MPEG-4/H.264, Audio: G.711 [Monaural]". The easiest way to play these types of movies on your Windows XP machine is to download and install QuickTime for Windows.
Download QuickTime for Windows (click here for download) and save it to your Windows Desktop.
Once downloaded, double-click on the downloaded file on your Desktop and follow the directions to install QuickTime on your Windows XP machine.

After you've installed and completed any reboots necessary, you should then be able to double-click on the video files from your camera and have them play automatically on QuickTime.

Thanks for using FixYa and please feel free to ask follow-up questions.

I have downloaded a couple of video clips from my new Sony Camera and WinDVD4 will not play them. The files are in MPEG-4 format. Any advice, solutions etc???

You can play them in Apple's itune or quicktime media player. Mpeg4 needs a special codec (decoder) that doesnt come with WinDVD4.

Computer cannot read and play the .mp4 video files from my Sanyo XActi CMOS 1920X 1080 .Is there a software I can download from the net?

Yes.

This is what the Sanyo CG9 Users Manual has to say about viewing videos taken with the camera:

"About video clip files recorded with this camera
You can use Apple’s QuickTime to play back video clips on a computer.
Playback may be possible using other software that supports the ISO
standard MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 (AAC audio)."

There are many ways to view mpeg-4 videos, but the one that is recommended for your camera from the CG9 support webpage is apple's quicktime available from apple here.
