How can I restore my previous settings, from damage done from Viruses?

Hi,
Computer virus especially the ones that comes from all over the world usually cause a lot of havoc on your Windows system. It disables nearly every built-in utilities such as regedit, cmd, folder options, msconfig, etc in Windows that can be used to possibly remove the virus. We can remove the virus using rescue disks but after successfully remove the virus from Windows, you still end up with registry editor, command prompt, task manager, system configuration utility and folder options disabled. Antivirus software can clean and remove virus
but they still haven't came up with one click solution to fix or restore the damages on Windows operating system
done by virus.

Good news is there are a lot of tools that can restore all these utilities that has been disabled by virus. One of my favorite is Remove Restriction Toool (RRT). RRT is able to easily re-enable back all the disabled Windows
functions that is caused by virus. Well, the virus creators is not satisfied with the mess they create on Windows computer, so they went ahead and create a new variant of a virus that will totally mess up your folder options advanced settings.

There was a case posted in forum which the "Hide extensions for known file types" option is missing from Folder Options advanced settings in View tab. You can get there by going to Control Panel > Folder Options > View tab.
hide-extensions-missing.png And here is another case where the whole advanced settings options is totally corrupted. You will find options such as Gue pikir2x lo itu, Adik lo banyak, Babe lo galak, Gak punya mobil, gue ada pacar baru, Gue kangen berat, Gue masih cinta lo, Gue pandang2x lo jelek, Hidup bersama lo:, Bakalan senang, Balakan susah, Biasa aza and etc... If I am not wrong, these are Indonesia language as they are very similar with Bahasa Melayu (Malaysian language).
gue-pikir2x-lo-itu.png
It was hilarious when the first time I saw this but I also pity the person who got infected by the virus that causes this damage.
I didn't know how to fix this because I have no experience with this problem. I thought the folder options advanced settings are hardcoded to Windows, but using SFC wouldn't fix this problem. The only solution I can think of is to do a repair and hopefully it'd reset whatever the virus has modified.
Now I found an easy way to fix the folder options advanced settings without wasting an hour on repairing Windows. Everything that is displayed in folder options advanced settings can be found in registry and not hardcoded to Windows. The location is at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder
I can confirm this because I've tried deleting the whole Folder key and the Folder Options advanced settings went blank! When I restore back the Folder key which I backed up earlier, everything was restored back. It is not easy (unless you want to be a real geek and memorize every shell32.dll codes) to manually fix the contents in folder options advanced settings because the "Text" key uses shell32.dll with some numbers.
What you can do is simply run the registry fix that I've exported from a "clean" and newly installed Windows XP and Vista. The registry key will automatically delete everything in Folder key and then restore back the default folder options advanced settings. I've also created an EXE version of the reg fix file using Reg2EXE because you could encounter problems in importing a reg file if your registry editor is disabled. I also have carry this fix around with me in my USB flash drive
.

Enable the Registry Editor, Task Manager and Folder Options Disabled by Viru

Virus attack is common these days and we often come across the problems like Disabled Folder Options or like Task Manager and Regedit disabled by Administrator. These problems are nothing but virus activities. The virus has infected our system and stopping us from accessing these options.
23f407e.jpg
Pressing keys Ctrl+Alt+Del opens up a dialog saying that “Task Manager has been disabled by your Administrator” whereas you are the Administrator yourself. It becomes very annoying when you think that you can fix this problem by going into the Registry Editor but it doesn’t show up. Even the Folder Options gets disabled.
This problem is generally caused by a virus named “Brontok” but don’t worry just use RRT (Remove Restrictions Tool) that can easily solve this problem. RRT is free and can successfully enable:
1. Folder Options
2. Regedit (Registry Editor)
3. Task Manager
4. Show Hidden Files option
The tool will come more useful if you use it in Safe Mode.
Download RRT

When I open computer a message displayed cannot find regsvr.exe

Hi there.
You have a virus on the PC!!

What the regsvr.exe virus does?
• This worm creates folders and a registry entry to enable its automatic execution at every system startup.
• This worm also creates a scheduled task to enable its automatic execution at a specified date and/or time.
• It also creates Autorun.inf file for its auto execution.
Solution to fix the problem:
1. If the task manager and registry editor is disabled then we need to enable them first. Read this post.
2. Delete the Autorun.inf file created by the virus. First go to cmd (start menu, run or search, type “attrib X:Autorun.inf –s –r –h” without quotes where X is your drive name which is having the problem. Now the file is visible and ready to delete. After deleting the file, close the explorer and open it again
3. Now type msconfig in the Run dialog and click on startup tab.
4. Look for regsvr and uncheck any options, click OK.
5. Now traverse to control panel -> scheduled tasks, and delete the At1 task that might be listed there.
6. Type regedit in the Run dialog to open the registry editor.
7. Click on Edit -> Find and search for regsvr.exe
8. Just delete all the occurrences of regsvr.exe virus (do not confuse it with regsvr32.exe which is not a virus).
9. Navigate to entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogon and modify the entry Shell = “Explorer.exe regsvr.exe” to delete the regsvr.exe from it.
shell_regsvr.jpg10. Now to actually delete the virus from the system go to system32 folder and delete the regsvr.exe virus file from there (you will need to uncheck the option of “Hide Protected System Files and Folders” in Folder Options to view the virus file).
Reboot the system for changes to take place.
If this is too much for you to understand please post back for an alternative.

Good luck

I couldn't view the hidden files when i apply show hidden files in my folder options in tools menu in menu bar.

Folder Options is removed from Tools in Windows by a virus. The virus is called W32.Rontokbro@mm OR W32/Rontokbro.gen@MM

The removal of this virus is slightly difficult. Antivirus can't remove it automatically. However detailed procedure to remove it is available at

http://coolexp.blogspot.com/2008/01/fold...

About this Virus/Worm:
What it does is creating new files which looked like a folder but its actually a .exe file. Unless you’ve enabled the view extensions in the folder options or else you won’t see the .exe extension of the file. The file is approximately 43.7Kb and normally people will click to open it because it looked like a folder. So after you’ve open it, the virus will run each time during startup and keep on spreading and spreading… into the harddrives.

More troubles coming up. Normally when you click “Tools” in explorer, there’s a “folder options” underneath it. Once the pc is infected with the virus, the Folder Options will be missing, which disabled you to change the options to view the extension of the files. So when you see a new folder appeared from nowhere and you clicked to open it out of curiousity, the virus spread more again. Moreover, the virus disabled the registry edit where you will see this message “Registry edit is disabled by the administrator” everytime you try to edit the registry.

So how to clean the virus then? I found some solution from the following link and have successfully cleaned it from my system.

http://coolexp.blogspot.com/2008/01/fold...

It will help you to get rid of this virus named W32.Rontokbro@mm aka brontok.a and to get back your hidden files. Source(s): http://coolexp.blogspot.com/2008/01/fold...

P.S.: If this information was helpful, please rate this solution.

may be you are only using the USER account so folder options are not available... there are full administrative right to use folder option so have a check with this...

in case you are administrator then also it s not available means this may be due to virus attack some system files have became unstable .... so try reinstalling operating system ...
and in further dont forget to use updated antivirus......

Folder options

This problem is most commonly caused by a virus called "Brontok". Brontok virus will make some changes to the system restrictions in order to hide itself from easy detection and also from easy cleaning. Here's a free tool called Remove Restrictions Tool (RRT) which is able to re-enables all what the virus had previously disabled, and gives you back the control over your own computer.ffc6f26.png
Note:run this program in safe mode
