You have a virus. One of the files in your registry has been corrupted that's why you can't log on. I'm going to teach you two ways you can fix your computer.

  1. The first way is very difficult, but you will be able to save any of your important data.
  • Recovery Console: First your going to need to find out which file has been corrupted. You can find the one you need by describing it in Google. when you find the correct file you need to find your recovery disk and hit recover rather than install. you'll come face to face with a Command prompt. from there you need to type the file name and then type copy. I highly advise against this because I have very little knowledge of the Recovery Console. But this is the only way I can think of to repair your operating system.
2. The second way is much easier and I highly advise it. However it means loosing all of your data.
  • Reinstallation: You need to insert your recovery disk that came with your laptop. When it asks you if you want to recover or reinstall choose reinstall. from there the task is simple choose your C:\ drive to install windows. Finish some routine questions and wait a while and you will have a brand new computer to work with.
Please rate me I would like to know if i was of any help. Thanks

Why wont my laptop log off even if I shut it down manualy

You will need to remove all power. This includes the battery. Then when you start up your system will report it shut down incorrectly. Select to start normally and as soon as the system has settled down properly shut it down again.
This fault is caused by a memory error when unloading on of the systems drivers. The above process will reset the driver(s) so that they load correctly next time you switch on...BUT YOU MUST REMOVE ALL POWER FIRST for it to shut down as it is stuck in that unloading loop.

Acer 5536 boots up goes to screen to select safe mode, tried both modes but after the selection screen goes blank with a little loading circle but goe sno further, no log in screen or anything, please help

Follow the steps below,

Step 1: Shut down your PC completely.
Step 2: Turn on the Power button.
Step 3: As soon as you turn it on start hitting the F8 key on your keyboard until you get to a black screen called "Windows Advanced option". (If you don't get to that that screen but you end up reaching the blue screen than that means you have delayed in hitting the F8 key. start again from step 1.)
Step 4: As soon as you reach "Windows Advanced option" use your down arrow keys to choose an option called "Last know good configuration".
Step 5: Select that and HIT ENTER.

Shut down computer but some lights stay on

Your are not "shutting down" the laptop. It is going into "Stand-by" mode.

#1:
When you want to shut down,
select [Start]
then select "Shut down" and not "Stand-by"

The power button will also work.
#2:
When you want to shut down,
Press the power button and nothing else.
The laptop will log you OFF and "shut down"

Logs on ok then shows no icons and goes straight to logging off

Got any enemies? :)

This is a long shot but i used to play this prank on people in college.

Put a logoff or shutdown shortcut in their startup folder. As soon as the PC starts up, it immediately shuts down or logs off.

I think safe mode is the best way to fix that, but again that is probably not the problem.

My laptop won't shut down properly!

Is it possible that you have changed the settings of what buttons do what on your system? E.g. you could have changed the power button to "switch user" instead of "shut down", to check this (in XP) go to "Power Options" (in Control Panel" and then click on the "Advanced tab" at the top, then select "Shut down" from the drop down menu at the bottom of the window.

If this is already set to shut down then maybe you could do a system restore in case another setting has been changed, restore it to before the PC started doing this.

Alternatively try actually choosing "Turn off Computer" from the Log On screen (press Ctrl + L to get to this screen, or choose switch user/log off). If you are using Vista I beleive that there is a shut-down option from the Log In Page there (which again you can access by pressing Ctrl + L on the keyboard.

Hope this helps!
