I was given one of these the other day. I was told the drawer wouldn't open yet the machine seemed to function fine. I removed the six screws holding the top on the box and then removed the four screws holding the drawer assembly in place. As you lift the drawer assembly out of the box, make sure you release the two pieces of black retaining tape holding the data cable to the box floor. Turn the drawer over and you will see that there is a little sideways bar mounted on the front underside of the drawer assembly. This is sticking. As you press the OPEN button, jiggle this bar and the drawer will open. You may have to manually move the drawer cogwheel a little to help free it up. Hope this helps.

Information for Owners of Toshiba SD-3980 and SD-K750 DVD Players To ensure the satisfaction of our customers and to maintain the integrity and quality of our products, Toshiba America Consumer Products, L.L.C. is issuing an important product update. This is not a safety issue.
Toshiba is committed to customer service and to continuously improving the quality of its products. It has come to our attention that certain DVD players bearing the model numbers SD-3980 and SD-K750 may at some point in their life stop playing discs due to a component part failure. In such case, the error message "bad" will be shown on the unit's display. Affected units will have "SU2" at the end of the model name (e.g., SD-3980-SU2), which can be found on the back of the unit.
If you own either of these models and experience the issue described above, please contact Toshiba Customer Solutions at 1-800-631-3811 for information on how to obtain a replacement unit.

There are a few solutions:
1. hit it ok just kidding
make sure when you are trying to open it does not say "disc Lock" or some sort. You can solve this problem by hitting the device menu and typing in 2005
2. Open up the device by unscrewing the six case bolts and then the 4 dvd section screws. After this I had the problem where my dvd was stuck in the play mode so the tools would just not let go. I had to gently wiggle them apart however be very careful. I have also heard that it might be a tired arm on the side that just needs some coaxing. HOpe this helps
