Question about IBM ThinkPad R31 2656 Notebook

1 Answer

Two problems with my IBM thinkpad r31 (DVD player and Battery):

1. It originally came with a CD-ROM that worked perfectly fine. However, I decided that I wanted a CD-RW and a DVD player. So, I purchased one that is indeed compatible with r31 series, and it plays cds fine. However, when I play a dvd it plays for about 20 seconds, freezes, says ''English'' and the volume pops up. It will then either resume playing, or it will start over from the beginning; either way, it stops every 20 seconds or so and repeats the process.

2. The laptop no longer recognizes my battery. I purchased a new battery, and the same problem occurred. So, I have to have it plugged in at all times, because it will neither recognize, nor charge my battery.

Any suggestions/solutions would be very appreciated!

Thank you!

Your power plug inside the laptop on the motherboard is likely corroded around the positive terminal connected to the motherboard. Repair places will charge a few hundred dollars to fix this fairly simple problem not requiring any parts. Good luck. If you live in new zealand I can do it for you fairly cheap...

Download VLC Media Player from www.videolan.org and try to play a dvd with that. It will let you know if it is a software or hardware problem.

I have a IBM thinkpad that has a cd drive only. Is there a way to take out the cd drive and install a drive that is for cd's and dvd's. If so, how would I go about doing that and how much would it cost?

Hi, what it the model of your DVD? Please the correct driver here : www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/TPAD-MATRIX.html

Other tips : CD and DVD drive troubleshooting
  1. Verify the disc media used.
Try multiple original discs (not burned copies) which are clean and free of scratches. See Information about CD and DVD media.
Note: Dark colored discs such as black may be more difficult to read.

  2. Verify that the disc is seated properly in the CD-ROM, CD-RW, or DVD drive.

  3. Verify that the drive is seated properly in the ThinkPad system by reseating the drive.
If another similar machine is available, then verify that the drive works in the other machine and that the other drive works in this machine.
    Notes:
    • The CD-ROM, CD-RW, or DVD drives cannot be removed in ThinkPad G40 and R50e systems.
    • Shut down, remove the power cord, and remove the battery from the ThinkPad system before removing the CD-ROM, CD-RW, or DVD drive.

The battery in my ibm thinkpad t30 died,I replaced it with a new one. It will not charge. The charger seems to be fine. Any ideas why its not charging

A possible problem could be the charger port on the actual motherboard. I would recommend finding some one to take a look and replace the charger port.

CD / DVD player not listed as device on Windows Explorer

Try physically removing the player and fire up the laptop. Power down the laptop, replace the player and power back up. If that doesn't help, see if BIOS recognizes it.
If that doesn't work, get back to me.

DVD

Hi,
I don't mean to disagree with my associate, but DVD players for R series (or T, A, etc) can be found for less than 20.00 US (Ebay is a good example)
For that matter, we've got at least a dozen at our shop which we sell for 25.00
Installation is very simple as well, just pop the old drive out, put the new drive in.
Good luck

Having a trouble with my DVD-ROM - IBM ThinkPad T42

Internal the pickup assy. (the laser) there are three components that read the discs, one for DVD one for CD and one for the DVD-ROM its likely that the DVD-ROM laser has gone out. Take the drive out and get the part number and look it up online on ebay or the like :-)
