Assming you're using MS Vista or XP Pro try using the Checkdisk tool. In <My Computer> right click on the drive icon, left click <Properties>. On the <Properties> screen left click the <Tools> Tab and use left click the <Error Checking/Check disk> option. Tick all options then <Start> and wait and hope.

Sorry to say but it seems the MFT(NTFS) or FAT(FAT16/32) sections are corrupt. If you havn't backed up the data(you should always do a hard copy of data) you will lose it unless you are willing to pay a lot of money to a company that takes it apart in a dust free enviroment to manualy read the platters. You are going to have to do a complete format.

they are quite a lot of different formats that hard drives can be run in. Fat 32, NTFS has several formatsof its own. Then there are the Linux and UNIX and Apple formats. By rights many are supposed to be compatible but the some reason they don't always work together.Have you tried running the new hardware installation wizard?I will have a look and see if I can find any information on this problem as I find it to be quite common.Hope this helpsregards

My windows XP OS won't recognize my SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 300GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

I found that often, external hard drives just don't have any active partitions and thus don't show up in Windows. Go into the control panel, administrative tools, computer management and then the disk manager and see if it has a partition. If it's just unallocated space, right click and make one.

I have a pininfarina simpletech 500GB usb external harddrive that does not show up in the My Computer folder of Windows Explorer. Tried hooking it up to a different computer with the same results; no...

If it is a new hard drive then it needs to be formatted. You can do this by going into your start menu - control panel - administrative tools - computer management - disc manager. I could be a little off on the wording as I don't have my computer handy, but in the disc management you should be able to right click on the drive in here and choose format. This will format the drive to be used. I hope this helps.

SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 320GB Power up problem

It could be that it's internal power supply burnt out,
in which case the drive itself could still be fine.

Try opening up the external case, and removing the drive.
Once you do, plug it in to your computer directly using its SATA cables, and see if that works.

Hope I helped,
Tom
