1 Answer

Loose barrel The barrel in our washing machine is completely loose and moving all around now. Is this something my husband can fix-- or do we need to call a repair man?

yes, the inner tub is loose. We're wondering if it's the "snubber"? But can't figure out how to get the machine cabinet open to look??

The top doesn't just hinge open on this model.

Yes it is the snubber/block that fits on the top of the basket drive assembly. There are 2 screws the hold the control panel to the top of the washer. the control panel will hinge upward. when you have done this, locate the clamps that help lock the complete cabinet to the frame (bronze in color). Relase the clamps and then pull the cabinet toward you. Once the cabinet is removed, remove the agitator by useing a 7/16" socket. You will then need to remove then spanner nut (has 4 notches in it) that holds the inner tub to the block. You will also need to remove the white plastic tub ring attached to the outer tub. To remove the spanner nut, you can either purches athe proper wrench P# TB123A for about $20.00 or use a coal chissel and hammer. It takes a pretty good blow to losen the spanner nut. Now you can remove the inner tub and replace the block.
I know this sounds like a lot of work but, it is doable. I have added my web site address if you need a place to order any parts. The block # is 96384

I hope this helps.

The whole barrel inside the washer seems loose and moves around more than it is supposed to. The machine will actually spin out but it acts like its off balance and we keep fixing that problem. The whole...

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France

Although you say 'we keep fixing that problem' I would recommend you try my method to make absolutely certain before considering something inside.

It is necessary to ensure absolutely that the machine, even when empty, has all 4 feet very firmly on the floor, and I mean firmly ;-0)

Doesn't matter whether it is empty or not but switch it off then-
very firmly push one front corner diagonally into the centre of the machine (sorry about my UK spelling!) and see if the machine moves or rocks AT ALL, even the slightest. If it does you will need the open-ended spanner which came with the (new) machine........which of course went missing a long time ago?!! An adjustable spanner will suffice.
Adjust the foot under that corner downwards until it is very firmly- almost pushing- against the floor but not so far that the corner lifts up!
If this corner did not rock do the same to the other.
Once you cannot rock the machine the slightest little bit, screw the locking nuts up tight to the underside of the machine so that they will not move. Ideally the rear feet should also be locked.

If this has not cured the problem it is possible that the internal drum suspension is malfunctioning.

Good luck,

John C

Our Kenmore washing machine is not spinning. The

if that belt was about 4 inches round all that is is a sound dampener for the clutch. what happened to mine was the bottom of the basket drive tube has been ground off and the cam driver fell down breaking the two little fingers on it and thus no spin action! check your motor coupling too,it is the rubber and plastic part between your motor and transmission. you would have to remove the pump, motor and transmission to check the clutch

Hello calmtouch,

You said,
When in spinning cycle, the barrel begins to move all over banging the washer across the floor. I don't even know what to look for.

sounds like the coupling connecting the tub to the transmission may be loose and throwing the wash tub out of rotation causing the banging and walking washer.
Bless You

Drum not moving around although sounds like something internally is moving around. Husband has taken back of and can't see anything obvious

Take the back off put washing machine on spin cycle making sure not to touch anything so you don't get shocked and look at the motor maybe the belt is loose or broken if it is loose just tighten via the spring adjustment or if is old washing machine belt may have streched and needs replaceing if motor don't move maybe needs rewinding and is cheaper to buy new washer.

Fills up- does not drain

Sounds like a bad motor coupler. If the machine acts like its wanting to run, ie.. buzzing or humming then there is a breakdown between the motor and transmission. Replace the motor coupler to solve the problem
