How long should I charge my 900mah li-ion batteries for the first time? How long should be after first time?

You should be OK to charge the battery for 10 hours at a constant current of about 90mA. I assume this battery is a 3.7v type, with a full charge voltage of about 4.2v (it would be useful to monitor this with a multimeter).

Hi Anonymous perform the following tests:
1. Fill acid type batteries to proper levels.
2. Charge battery overnight at 1-2 amps you need 12.5 volts or better after charging.
3. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Hook up battery positive cable, then with your multimeter on the milliamp scale connect one lead to the negative battery post and the other lead to the ground cable. Meter should read 3 milliamps or less, 10 milliamps with a radio, 15 milliamps with radio and CB. If your multimeter reads higher you need to isolate the circuit by pulling fuses and circuit breakers one at a time and observe multimeter for a drop in amperage then get out your test light and track down the short in that circuit.
5. Hook up the multimeter to the battery set it to DC volts and start the engine if multimeter falls below 9.0 volts while cranking you need to perform a proper load test on the battery and replace if necessary.
6. With the engine running at 3600 RPM, the battery should read 14.3-14.7 volts if not continue tests.
7. Unplug the voltage regulator from the alternator at crankcase by the front of the primary cover.
8. To test voltage regulator go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8EjV0IjW9Q
9. With the multimeter set to the ohms scale, with one lead grounded, touch an alternator pin ohmmeter should read infinity, if not replace the stator.
10. With both leads touching alternator pins multimeter should read 0.1 to 0.2 ohms on 1989 and later models. 0.2 to 0.4 ohms 1988 and earlier models, if not replace the stator.
11. With the multimeter set on AC volts scale, both leads touching alternator pins multimeter should read 16 to 20 volts AC for every 1000 RPM'S 1989 and later and 19 to 26 volts AC for every 1000 RPMS. If not replace the rotor.

I'm a novice at using a multi-meter but want to check my volkswagon beatle for a short, one circuit at a time. After battery is charged up, it goes dead after a few weeks. Worse in colder temperatures....

you would be measuring current
you would set the meter to maximum current setting
Then place the leads between the terminals of the fuse for each circuit. with the fuse removed.
so if you have a ten amp fuse you would expect a current either below 10Amp or at 10 amp.
maximum setting of current is in case short circuit to ground causes a huge current drain. To prevent blowing up amp meter of multimeter.
You may wish to put a fuse on the lead of the multimeter to safe guard your meter from blowing up in case you encounter a high current it can't handle.
if via the battery disconnect one lead and put a fused meter lead on the battery and the other lead on the battery cable. look for current drain while car switched off.

Amber light flashes when trying to charge battery

Check the battery voltage , check the contacts of the battery. Chek the adapter for any possible current limiting reducing the charge level. If so the charging will not take place and will result in this indication.
If possible measure the charging voltage/current using a multimeter with an external battery or a device. If the battery is not charging and the camera is not getting powered ON then a cross check on the battery or adapter will be useful

No, the charger is only usable to charge the rechargeable NiMH or Li-Ion battery which comes with the radio. Attempting to charge Alkaline rechargeable batteries with this charger could cause the to expode. If your charger is not charging the batteries which came with the units, it could be you do not have the charger cord end plugged in all the way, or the batteries dropped below the initial charge level by setting on a store shelf too long. Most TalkAbouts come with a cradle style charger to hold the radio, and a possible plug to plug into the charge hole. Check all connections, and clean any battery/charger contacts with a pencil eraser. To re-initialize the batteries you would need to attempt 3-5 charge cycles by charging for 8-10 hours, then letting the battery rest for 8-10 hours, repeating 3-5 times as needed. If this does not bring the battery back to life, you need to replace the batteries.

Battery Replacement

well I know you can buy the battery in them from a third party but Not to sure if its really worth it. I do know there is and issue with these if they sit around for a while and not used it seems like the battery dies even more and then you can not charge it. If you come across not being able to charge it, what I did was take it apart and apply a 1.5 or a AA battery battery to the leads. You will need a multimeter to determine which is negative and positive but what I did was tape some 22 guage wire to the negative and positive ends of a AA battery and apply the positive of the AA to the positive of the battery in the treo and negative to negative. You only need to hold it there for 3-5 secs and then you should be able to charge it.
