Dishwasher flood

I have a whirlpool "Queit Partner I" type dishwasher.  When I used it for the first time it flooded my kitchen floor.  I had to stop in the middle of everything.  What do I do from here.  Not sure if I put in the correct detergent or if I put too much in.  Never had one of these things before.  I was always the dishwasher...help...I can be reached at stm727@gmail.com.  Thanks for your help.
