refresh the USB ports:
1. Right click MY COMPUTER
2. Select PROPERTIES
3. Select HARDWARE
4. Select DEVICE MANAGER
5. Select UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLLERS
6. Right click on each USB CONTROLLER and select Uninstall
7. Uninstall all entries
8. Reboot your computer
9. As your computer re-boots it will reinstall all USB connections it detects
THEN, when all other USB items have been configured and connected by the system, you then should try connecting your USB drive

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.

Did the external drive come with software? If so, reinstall the software and then plug the drive in.

If the software is on the external drive. Plug it into another computer and copy the software onto a flash drive, then install on your PC.

Also, check in the Device Manager, and make certain the the drive is not recognized as "other device" or exclamated out.

Also, click on the "Start" menu, click the "Run" command, and type in: services.msc , scroll down until you see both these services. right click on each of the services about and select properties, on the general tab, change the startup type to "automatic" and click the start button under the service status. do this for both of the services.

External hard drive was dropped and now no power

You may have accidently broken some of the internal components of the external enclosure. If you have the know how, you should take the hard drive out and test it in a computer to see if the hard drive is still good. If the hard drive is still good, you can get away with buying another enclosure. If the hard drive isnt good, your better off just buying another external drive.

Assuming the drive itself is still ok (it sounds like it would be), then yes, you can put the drive into another case or directly into the motherboard if you know how to do that.

How do I completely reset my external hard drive

1. You need to check how much free disk space is available on your laptop.
2. You need to check what duplicated files you have on both the laptop and the external hard drive and which is the latest version.
3. You need to decide to move the latest versions of the data files from the external hard drive to the laptop. This automatically delete these from the external hard drive. The older versions on the external hard drive can be deleted.
4. Now you need to check how much data is stored on your external hard drive.
5. If the amount of data stored on the external hard drive exceeds the available disk space on the laptop, then you cannot copy these files to the laptop.
6. If you have sufficient disk space on the laptop you can copy the data from the external hard drive to the laptop. I suggest you make a folder to copy this data to it.
You can now delete all the data from the external hard drive or you can format the external hard drive to make a clean external hard drive.

External hdd not detected

Formatting a drive means resetting it to manufacturer settings
And deleting everything in there, this solves most of hard
Disk problems, mp3s ipods ect..

if its powering on without being connected to anything do the following.

connect it via usb cable to your pc, or if it’s a hard drive its already connected.
click on start, right click on my computer and go to manage
in the table select, "storage" then "disk management"
in that table find the drive that relates to your mp3 player
if its not there "buy a new mp3 this is faulty" if its there
then right click on it and select "new partition"
you just next next everything and then format it and after
a while it shows "healthy2
unplug it, plug it back on and that's it your drive is fully working
now move what ever you want to it just like before.
