SOURCE: I replaced my Posi-Temp cartridge for the shower

no one ever really figured out why this happens, but you can purchase a "hammer arrestor" to solve this problem. they work good and believe it or not they are best installed at shower valve. good luck

SOURCE: Had a leaky Moen Posi-Temp shower faucet.

Yesterday, I also repaired a leaking bath/shower cartridge in a Moen Posi-temp faucet (mod. 1222). I couldn't locate a Moen cartridge so I bought one in Home Depot made by Danco (#88675A). My priority was to correct the water leak. Today I noted that when the commode fill valve shuts off, a noise (clicking) comes from the tub that I suspected as water hammering. I tried flushing the water lines to correct for air hammer several times without success.
So that brings me to this site and I see that someone else has experienced the same problem. To correct the noise, I'll need to get a Moen cartridge. Until then, my question is: IS THERE ANY HARM DONE by leaving the Danco cartridge in place?
I can get accustomed to the metalic/hammering noise whenever the toilet is flushed and the tub faucet is shut off.

turn hose water off. open facet at lowest level to drain out lines. open a few faucets around the house to let air in. then close everything up. turn water back on. repressurize system by turning some faucets back on. see if it still happens. this is letting air back into any anti-water hammer devices that might be in system. sometimes they loose the air in them that makes them work. this should add air back in. good luck.

NO DONT replace anything > You have what id call water hammer. This happends when water gets in the air chambers, Air chambers are nothing more than a 1 foot or 2 foot long section of pipe with a cap on it. When its working air gets trapped in the pipe and you can compress air but not water, so if the air is gone BANG BANG goes the pipe.

takes 10 mins to fix. turn off the water to the house out side. open every faucet in the house and the hose fauects out side. wait 5 mins and then close everything and turn on the water. You will see ait come out of the faucets it will stop after just a momnet or two.

That should do it. check your tub shower valve and it will work fine

Thanks for asking us to help

Hope this worked for you Tom

To talk about your problem forces me to assume a few things.....If you allow the water to flow without cartridges and handles, the water must be flowing straight through the cartridge channels and out into the tub. It is not flowing through your tub spout or shower head when you test the water this way. If I'm correct, then the problem is isolated to the water mix operation. That means coming out of your spout or shower head. So now I have to ask a question. When you operate as normal (cartridges and handles installed) does your problem show up only on your shower head or does it also show up when operating out of the tub spout? If the problem is isolated to the shower head, try a head replacement. It may be partially plugged. If it's head or spout there may be something in the mixing pipe that only shifts around as pressure increases. I hope that is not your problem. It would require pulling those pipes out for inspection and most likely replacement. Nimsgame

Replacing the spray diverter or faucet cartridge ( depending on your model) will fix the problem. Call American Standard and ask for free replacement parts.

When hot water is turned on the pipes make this vibrating sound. i have two sinks in my bathroom. When I turn the hot water on on sink 2 the pipes vibrate. Sink 1 is fine.

Hi,
There is a loose washer in the faucet...this flaps as the water goes through it and makes the vibration...
You either need to replace the faucet or the cartridge (washer) in the faucet that valves the water...
This will stop that vibration and hammering sound

The cartridge is the culprit. Replace it with an OEM Moen cartridge. What happens is that some replacement cartridges may not operate the same as the moen brand when they are in the closed position. This can sometimes result in the water hammer effect you are experiencing. Change the cartridge and it should alleviate the problem. If it doesn't work let me know and we will go at it from a different angle.

I'm not aware of any problems with non moen replacement parts being the cause for a water hammer problem. Start with the simplest and cheapest correction which is using a moen replacement cartridge. If the water hammer persists then you may have to install a water hammer arrester in the plumbing system. This is basically a shock absorber in the plumbing system to stop the effect of water hammer. An arrester will cost you around $10 to $15 at your local plumbing supply shop. If you are not comfortable soldering copper then you will want to hire a licensed plumber to complete the work for you.

I had the same type of problem with an older toilet in my house. It developed a water hammer when it shut off after filling the tank. I replaced the fill valve with a generic universal replacement for about $10 and it stopped. Again sometimes the simplest fix will work. Let me know how it works out.

When the water is turned on, the faucet "sputters" and "hammers" as if the water had been turned off then back on when it hasn't been. Plumber says we need new part (inside cartridge 070807-Aqua Source)....

The USUAL cause of this is the diverter valve that channels the water to the sprayer. There are several types of these so search for yours in google to find a blow-up drawing of it. They are usually in the tower the spout swings on and sometimes are a pintle valve like a little rod with dumbells on the ends. Crud can make them not seat then they will cause the hammering.
