Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

Hi. My problem is the thermostat says "cool on" and there is air coming from the vents, the outside unit is humming but the fan is not moving and the house is not cooling down. Any thoughts? Oh, unit never used , installed late fall 08.

Most likely cause is the fan run capacitor. Have you checked that?

Next, loose corroded connections at fan.

Next fan motor failure or lack of lubrication.

Outside unit will only run for a short amount of time with A/C before the fan stops turning and starts humming, squealing/screeching and the top of the outside unit gets hot.

The bearings are bad in the motor and after the fan runs enough it eventually gets hot, making the bearing screech and the fan locks up. Need to replace motor again. See if it has a warranty. The reason it gets hot is because the fan is what removes the heat from the coil and if the fan isn't running there is nothing to cool it off so to speak.

Ac unit isn't blowing

It sounds like your freezing up at the coil, which in turn, blocks airflow across coil and only a small amount of air comes out of the vents. This also explains the cold air coming from fan on the outside unit, since the system cannot absorb the heat from the inside of the house through the coil. Your air outside is usually blowing out warm to hot air because thats the heat it rejects out of your system. I would turn the thermostat to "OFF" and turn just the fan setting to "ON" instead of Auto, this thaws the system out faster. Give it time to fully thaw, make sure filters are clean, and check airflow. If airflow is back to normal, your problem is more than likely the charge of refrigerant. If you have to call a technician out, make sure the unit is not frozen at all before they get there, they would not be able to do anything with the system froze. Hope this helps and good luck!

We have a Goodman Furnace and Air Conditioner approx 7 years old. When I put the Cool on thermostat and lowered the temperature for the air conditioner to come on the furnace fan started but the outside...

Hi,
You are right. The outside unit starts quickly. The humming will either be the evaporator fan or the AC compressor itself. If you can reach into the evaporater fan with something narrow and stiff you may be able to see if the fan turns. Sorry for the trouble you are having.
One or the other is trying but unable to start, hence the humming.

The fan is not turning on my outside air unit but it is still blowing hot air through the vents. There is also ice build up at the bottom of the unit. It is making a humming sound.

You will need to replace the outside fan,or condenser fan motor.
Shut unit down, before the compressor gets damaged.

Without the condensor fan the heat will not be blown to the outside air and the unit will not cool.

You may be low on freon too, have it checked.

Blower Turns off if ac unit comes on. No air coming through vents

This only could 1--2 things, a bad circuit board fan relay or bad thermostat. To check for bad thermostat, take off the front cover to reveal the 4-wire terminial and jump the red-wire (power)-cool,(yellow -y or blue)--- green--fan white-(heat)..........red to yellow-or y=cool. Thank-you-very-much!

Air conditioner not working

the outside condesor unit is not coming on for a number of possible reasons. First check your breakers for a tripped breaker, even if they appear on, turn the ac breakers off and then turn them back on. if after this, turn on the thermostat, outside you should here the contact switch on the condensor unit humming. if still no power, check for any breaks on your wires going in from the house, still nothing give a call back

Fan not blowing

Even when the power is off at the unit outside the thermostat will supply power to the contactor of the outside unit. This may give a hum or buzz as you stated. If when the power is on to the outside unit the fan tries to start but only hums the motor may be bad. Does the compressor start and run?
