Question about LaCie Hard Disk 1TB Desktop with Hi-Speed USB2.0 USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

Spinning, then nothing

I recently bought this drive, attached to a Mac mini and working fine until yesterday when I came home - the green light was still on but the drive wasn't showing on the desktop so I unplugged the power supply from the drive and replugged it - (this has worked in the past when the drive wouldn't show; usually when I restarted the mini) -This time there are three or four weak-sounding attempts that the drive makes to spin up, then nothing - the green light stays on.

Any clues would be greatly appreciated

thanks,

Hate to have bad news, but it's sounding like the drive may have gone bad...the restarts prior were warnings that it was on the way out... I would make sure you've got another drive, hook them both up and if you power up the suspect drive, you may get lucky enough to boot it up for a short while and maybe long enough to transfer some files to the newer drive.... good luck... Also, be sure that all your computer and periferals are connected to power via a power surge protection device... I've lost a few tv's and printers becuase I was too lazy or in too big a hurry...then a voltage spike trashed my stuff... Hope this helps..

Hi, has this mini been opened up to add more memory?
I would suggest that before you conclude that the ATA bus is damaged, open the mini up and see if the ATA connector is still connected to the motherboard. (It's the same connector for both drives).

Imac not booting

Hi, Sorry you're having trouble,
OK, so much is happening here...
Can you shut the Mac down ( by holding the power on button for 5 seconds or so ) and then, make sure your keyboard is connected and that nothing is resting o the keyboard possibly pressing down on a key without you knowing it....
Now, start up your Mac and VEY QUICKLY, press down on the ( alt ) key and hold it down until you see a blue screen with a large Right pointing arrow and a circular arrow.
This is the start up disk selection screen. You should eventually see your Hard Drive appear at which point, you click on your hard drive and then the right arrow to start up the mac on your Hard drive.
If your disk is still OK, it will boot properly.
If your disk does not appear in the blue selection screen, it means you either no longer have a valid bootable system on that disk or it is KAPUT.
So, if this is the case, you will need to get a new hard drive.
How old is your mac, what model is it what Mac OS is it ?

It's possible something was damaged on the interface board inside the case, or on the drive itself. If you listen to the drive and it sounds like it's spinning up normally when you turn on the power, it's probably the board. I haven't had it happen yet on my WD external drives (I have two), but I have seen 3 Maxtor brand external drives with that problem. The drive itself was fine when put into another external case.

Working fine until psu packed in, replaced psu, begins power up

The PSU dying may have destroyed the motherboard also. Try removing all interface cards and disconnecting all drives to make sure.

Mac mini will not produce video

Hi, Sorry you are having problems,
Well, that sounds pretty bad. Does the Mac make the start-up sound when you turn it on?
Does the little light in front turn on ?
Do you hear the hard drive spinning up and working to boot the mac ?
So, if all these questions are answered Yes.... sounds like the video connection has blown.
If you say the Mac is almost new, Apple should cover this with the one year warranty.
Good luck.
