I suggest checking the ignition switch - I've seen switches do this before, where the switch powers up the starter solenoid but cuts the power to the coil. Test coil output while in start position - if the voltage is low or non existent, there's your problem!
Best of luck and thanks for using Fixya!!

SOURCE: electric start clicking

Check the battery with a VOM while pressing the start button. If you have good voltage check the voltage on the positive cable on the starter. If you have good voltage there you have a bad starter, considering your cable connections are clean and tight. If no voltage at the starter the solenoid is no good. Usually the click is the solenoid closing and if the connections are not clean or tight the current will not make it to the starter.

SOURCE: having problems with my 2005 polaris sportsman 4x4

try jumping the two posts on the solenoid near the battery with key on , then try to start , if it starts or turns over it needs a solenoid, or the bendix is hanging up on the flywheel, had the same problem and took off my recoil cover and found teeth on bendix all chewed up and stuck on flywheel. try to pull the recoil start first and see if that releases bendix, if not remove recoil cover for inspection,or your starter is bad, if it sounded like an old dodge starting up prior to it not starting , its probably the bendix

Nissan Frontier V6 2007 will not start in cold weather. Battery ok. Will crank but not start. Using battery booster will start and run fine. What would cause this?

You may have a failing starter. After about 5 - 7 years the battery begins to weaken it will allow your starter to kick but the starter itself may be too worn and too weak to keep your flywheel turning.

Car clicks but wont start

the alternator lamp will not go out until the engine runs..
the alt converts engine horse power to electric power,
no engine, no alt.
so that means the engine will not start, or better it wont crank
subzero C or Subzero F.,, -10F or -10C, vastly different temps.
no crank, then jumper cable crank it with donor car running.
crank now,?
yes , then battery is bad, weak or just discharged.
no, then starter bad, or key line bad.
hot wire starter solenoid. cranks now, is bad key line
if not, bad starter.

did you wiggle the shifter at crank.
did you wiggle key. extra.
did you try crankiing in neutral using fresh start contacts.>... yah.

2004 trailblazer doesn't start on first try. It cranks and eventually starts but usually 3-6 tries. Once started it runs fine. I have no check engine light. We have replaced the spark plugs, b

For engine to run it has to have:
Fuel, air and spark.
So if it doesn't start, something's missing.
Is your fuel pressure OK? Is your spark present? Is ECM firing injectors?
Check all those basics and I'm sure you'll find what's wrong.

Had door to f150 open for awhile truck was running all of a sudden it shut off and i cant get it restarted. just clicking noise and panel not working lights dim HELP!!! its done this once before when i was...

Sounds like a problem with the recharging system.

If you had a lot of electrical running such as headlights, stereo, interior lights, heater etc there is a large draw on the electrical system. At idle you could run the battery down. Jump start would solve the problem.

The clicking you hear could be one of two things.
1. The starter relay operating. This sound would come from the fuse box.

2. The starter solenoid engaging the stater motor. This would come from close to the engine where the starter is mounted. If the power is low the solenoid engages the starter but there in not enough power to turn the engine over. Again a jump start would solve this.

Sometimes it will go later after everything is shut down and the battery has time to "relax" from the draw or the temperature is higher. All can help a start.

You may have a weakening battery that is having trouble holding a full charge. A battery shop can bench test the battery for you.

If it is OK if could be a failing charging system.

If you have has a squeaking sound at idle or when cold and wet your alternator belt may be loose. It can be easily tightened.

If not your alternator may be weakening. Again a repair shop can test for output. Or simply test with a voltage tester to see the output.

If all is OK it could be more advanced in your charging system. For a do it yourself fix. Go the the library and get a copy of the Bently service manual for your yr of vehicle make model.

Runs down and wont crank after setting over night will jump start

It could be the battery, corrosion on the battery terminals, or it could be something drawing current while the car is not running - especially if you've recently any kind of powered accessory in the car. For a self-test, you can disconnect both battery cables (negative first) at night, clean any corrosion that may be on the battery terminals, and then reconnect only the positive cable. Reconnect the negative cable in the morning, and if the car starts easily you can be pretty certain that the problem is a current draw. If not, it's definitely the battery. Given the year of the car, if it still has the original battery in it, you probably need to replace it.
