I would suggest seeing if it needs a tune-up first if it hasn't had one this year. If the problem is still there after that you may want to check the fuel cap vent hole as they can get plugged up. It could also be a dirty carb or low cylinder compression.

SOURCE: My Toro self perpelled lawn mower starts then conks out.

It sounds like your fuel system is plugged up (or water in the carb) First i would make sure there is good fuel supply to the carb, then if so & not running, I would remove the carb and clean as it appears that it is running properly otherwise. Also check your air cleaner element as it may be totally plugged up.. Hope this helps you, Rick

SOURCE: engine starts but dies if you put a load on it

Carb needs cleaned as it can't handle the load of the engine and the deck at the same time. My guess about the spark plug melting is that the electronic ignition may have become hot while trying to start the mower causing the wire to melt.

SOURCE: lawnmower drive (forward or reverse) will not engage

1) Have you removed the rear tire for flat tire repair recently?
many times the key that couples the rear wheel and axle falls to the ground, and you do not see it missing upon re-assemlby.
2) check transmission drive belt condition
3) idler pulley and tension spring
4) linkages that control the shifter

SOURCE: Put Lawnmower on its side and changed blade. Put

Most likely you have flooded the cylinder with oil. You can try this and see if it helps you out.

Remove the spark plug, clean and dry it with carb cleaner, let dry, spray carb cleaner in the spark plug hole and thoroughly flush it out. Let is sit this way for about 20 minutes. Reinstall your spark plug and see if it will start up for you. If it does you are done if not go to an auto parts store and buy some starter fluid. Spray the fluid with just short burst into the air cleaner. Try to start it. Repeat and it should stay running in a couple of tries.

I have a Toro 16.5 riding lawnmower it stop and wouldn,t start back what could be my problem?

Battery charged? Bad fuel? Low on oil? 30w oil required. Clean carb. Check for improper ground on starting circuit. Ignition switch providing power to starter when key turned? Always use Stabile in gas. Remove bowl from carb ensure float is working properly. Float up no fuel flow, float down fuel flow. Ensure oil is full, low oil shutoff will not allow starting.

I bought a Toro rear wheel drive lawnmower last May.I have never had any problems with it until now. the left rear wheel sticks. With the power off, I can roll it a little and it will stick and then I can...

The gear drive is probably just a little dirty. You can clean and lube the gears by pulling of the rear wheels and then remove the rear drive gears. Clean them and the axle and reinstall. Be careful to reinstall in the same direction as was removed. A smearing of axle grease in the axle and inside of the drive gears should take care of this.

Also remember that TORO mowers come with a 2 year warranty. Go to to find your nearest servicing dealer.

Good luck!

I have a self-propelled Toro Personal Pace lawnmower, Model 20022. Both rear wheels engage and rotate when I lift the rear wheels off the ground, but when I put the mower back on the ground, the right...

Routine maintenance is required on the drive gears on these Toro mowers and Toro doesn't tell anybody. Put a block under the rear end to lift the wheel off the ground. Remove the wheel. You will see the drive gear. VERY IMPORTANT: take good notes, pictures, etc..when dissasembling. Remove the outer snap ring retainer from the axle shaft. Next should be a thin washer. Remove the washer. Pay very close attention to the gear, as it has to go back on in exactly the same direction. Remove the gear. There is a slot in the axle shaft. Rotate the axle to have this slot pointed up. In the slot is a small key (rectangular piece of metal), remove the key. Under this key is a spring. It, and the key, is stuck in the axle slot, therefore not allowing the gear to drive the wheel. Dig out the key and spring, clean them and the slot. Put a dab of axle grease in the slot and reassemble. In my shop, this is part of a mower tune-up, and is recommended every 50 running hours. That is usually every other year for the average home-owner.
DO NOT TIP your mower over to do this repair. Mowers are just like cars, they like all 4 wheels to stay on the ground. Tipping a mower over can/will cause fluids to go places they aren't supposed to go.
This is a relatively simple repair and can be done with basic mechanical knowledge and basic tools.
Do the other side too, it needs it.
Good luck!

I need to replace a drive belt on a personal pace Toro lawnmower. I have it off of the drive shaft on the engine but do not know how to get it around the self drive pulley on the back drive shaft pulley.

put the belt on the engine drive shaft first the start it on the other pulley (watch your fingers so you don't pinch them) and turn it by hand clockwise and it should roll right on.

Toro GT5 lawnmower - the pull cord (to start the engine) only comes out about 3 inches - I'm afraid to pull to hard for fear of breaking the line.

First - remove spark plug and squirt 3mls of engine oil in there - replace spark plug and leave overnight.

Try pulling that start handle !
Two things may happen - it snaps or - it turns over.
If it turns over - prime fuel and start in choke setting.
If the cord snaps - undo the pull start block - and take it to a lawnmower spares depot, and buy some more cord. It's quite cheap.
Get the length right so you don't have too much.
Next - the engine is probably seized - so needs freeing up. You may be able to do this with the new cord, Otherwise - take the head off the cylinder and tap the piston down with a wooden drift while turning the crank.
Use a non-setting gasket sealant like hematite red to re-use the old gasket. Lawnmowers are quite resilient.
