If the volume is too low on all inputs, even when you turn up the volume, first turn down the volume completely and check to see if you have a tape monitor button pushed in. If you do, disengage the button, then turn the volume back up. For more information, please visit my website at audioserviceclinic.com. Thank you.

Onkyo AV Receiver TX-SR503 While sleeping with earphones connected, the receiver shut down and the standby light blinked. I unplugged the power cord, reconnected power and the receiver shut down...

Have you provided adequate ventilation?
May be your receiver is running hot and when there is loud volume it is obviously getting overloaded. There are no fans inside 674, the only way to provide good ventilation is to keep the top of receiver clear for atleast 6 to 8 inches.

Hope that helps.....

VERY LOW VOLUME FROM SORROUND SPEEKERs

some surround sounds do not put out loud sounds except from the front speakers only. Try using different inputs to see if it makes a difference.

Volume is changing/decreasing

well, that information is slightly undescriptive and unnecessarily vague, but I think I can suggest a few things.

If the problem only occurs when watching your HDTV, I am assuming you are using the Audio Out on your TV to pipe sound down to your Onkyo receiver. If this is the case, the TV volume may be turned down lower by mistake and you have to turn up the Onkyo's volume to correct for the difference.

Another possibility is that some other variable has changed i.e. source material, programming, TV firmware update. What did you change to get this to happen? Is it reproducible? Can you use other source material (DVD, VCR, or DAP (mp3 player) and use it at the same volume levels as before? I tend to think that your problem is with the HDTV, not the Onkyo. User error is the most common type.

Distortion/noise and buzz in front left speaker

Try to see if the reciever will make the buzzing/noise without anything connected to it except power, and speakers. Tune into a local radio station and see if the noise continues. If the noise has stopped, then you know there is an issue with the player or cable.

Treble and bass function

In looking through the service manual for this model, I see a Tone Switch that allows you to bypass the tone circuits, and it may be the one all the way to the left of your front panel. If that's not it, I would get out the owners manual and see what they suggest. I doubt that you actually have an electronic malfunction with your unit.
