Your discribing 2 opposite symptoms. But 1 thing may be causing both. first thing I think of is a defective defrost heater safety switch. It allowes the food -and freezer compartment to become too warm during defrost. This allowes the food to un freeze. then when defrost is terminated the temp goes back under freezing til the next defrost. 3 to 5 cycles like this and yes you could ahve freezer burn and icecream melting. DOes the ice cream refreeze too? If so you have to remove the freezer pannel covering the evaporastor coil inside the freezer. Locate the defrost safety.

1 of 3 kinds 2 opf these are b8-metal switches and are round and of these 2 kinds 1 is about nickel size and the other is about quarter size and both are round and can be attached to the coil tubing or the freezer wall. Usually these 2 kinds are on Refg/Freezers with no electronics on the door or thermostat.

If you have an Led or LCD display you ahve electronic controls and in most cases have an electronic thermisitor about 1" long and 1/4 to 3/8 inch dia and insulated and attached to the freezer coil line leaving the freezer or on one of the U bends of the coil. It may be attached with a plastic wire tie. (The tie could be broken but this is doubtful from discription).

1st freezer burn is usually caused by drying out of the food while still frozen. And this is why your case is so interesting by doing it so quickly. In all cases 1 the food is not in air tight containers. And the water in the food is being drawn out of it.

What is Freezer Burn?

Is a condition that occurs when frozen food has been damaged by dehydration and oxidation, due to air reaching the food . It is generally induced by substandard (non-airtight) packaging. Freezer burn happens when air is exposed to your frozen food, and the water in both the air and the food, or just in the food, re-distributes itself. If the food you froze happens to have a lot of fat in it, the freezer burn can get even worse, and actually oxidize in the dry spots, leaving what was once a delicious roast a dry, gray piece of meat.moz-screenshot.pngmoz-screenshot-1.png

While freezer burn will not hurt you, it makes food look and taste a lot less appetizing. Here's how to avoid having those weird dry gray patches appear on that steak you saved for a special occasion.
There are some tips someone has to have in mind to prevent this problem.
1) Try to get all the air out of packages before you freeze them. The freezer burn will happen in those tiny pockets of air.
2) Keep the freezer door closed. If you have a family member that tends to open the freezer, then go off and do something in the kitchen while the door is still open, try to break them of the habit. This also applies to anyone who opens the door just to stare into the frozen chamber for five minutes hoping to find something to eat.
3) Let any food you do freeze cool to room temperature before you store it, but try not to let it sit for more than 30 minutes before you pack it up for storing.
4) Keep your freezer temperature constant. A few degrees below 0 are ideal. Freezer burn only happens at 1 degree and above. Lots of freezer burn can be a sign of a freezer that is on the fritz.
5) make sure all seals are closed. If you don't trust a package or you really want to make sure something doesn't get freezer burn, put it inside a second container or wrap it in tin foil.
6) Soups and stews and other liquids need some "give" in their packaging to allow for the liquid to expand and contract as it freeze and thaw. Put a piece of plastic wrap over the top of soups, just under the container cover, to let the expansion happen without exposing the soup to the air.
7) Leave space between your frozen items so the air can circulate.
8) Do not over stuff your freezer. Putting any more than 2 to 3 pounds of food for every cubic foot of freezer space is asking for freezer burn.
The chemistry behind freezer burn is called sublimation. It’s when water goes from a solid directly into a gas. You can see sublimation on a warm day after it has snowed. The water vapor rising up from the snow piles is sublimating -- going directly from a solid into a gas (water vapor) -- entirely skipping the liquid phase? www.victorwod1234.blogspot.com

When the heater comes on for defrost behind the rear freezer panel , it gets red hot . The defrost thermostat ( bimetal ) , cuts the heater off , when it reaches 140 degrees for new (2000 - 2009 ) and 55 degrees for older refrigs . When this temp is reached at the top of the coils , the lower portion will be hotter due to being closer to the heater . The frozen food in the freezer , is what keeps the temp down in front of the rear freezer panel . No food in freezer , the hotter the freezer section will be .

Whirlpool ED25RF Does ice maker have a filter? My ice taste funny and sometimes its dirty

The ice maker doesn't have a filter , the problem could be the ice maker itself that the tray ,which is made out of aluminum is losing particles.Look at the conditions of the ice maker tray ,if you see like white spots replace the ice maker.

Frozen foods collecting ice crystals in my freezer

Your freezer is getting too warm during the defrost cycle, causing condensation in your veggies and eventually freezer burn. Likely your door seals are leaking as well after 17 years which introduces even more humidity into your freezer, but I'm assuming your talking about sealed bags of veggies? You need to decrease the temp in your freezer. Get a thermometer and make sure you average around zero degrees. The cause? When is the last time you cleaned the coils at the back of the fridge. Or if they are sealed, perhaps you need to have it serviced. You can try moving your freezer setting to a colder setting it may take care of the problem.

Ice builds up inside packages in freezer.

This is the moisture coming out of the food. It is what causes freezer burn.

The problem is made worse in frost free models by the defrost cylce. Best way to slow it down is to use vacuum bags or freezer bags. Also above 0 F food deterioates faster and below it gets freezer burn and the moisture problem faster.

ICE CUBE MAKER SMELLY ICE CUBES

Hello margrek
Welcome,

YOU SAID, YOU HAVE KENMORE ELITE BOTTOM FREEZER WITH ICE MAKER THE ICE CUBES SMELL HORRIBLE ALWAYS, I EVEN TOSS THEM OUT EVERY FEW DAYS, STILL SAME PROBLEM

Ice has bad odor and taste.

1• Ice has picked up odor or
flavor from strong food stored
in refrigerator or freezer.
2• Water running to ice maker
has poor taste or odor.
3• Ice not used frequently enough.
4• Cover foods tightly. Discard stale ice. Ice maker will
produce fresh supply.
5• Add filter to water supply line. Consult a water purifying
company.
7• Discard stale ice.

Freezer burn on ice-cubes

Black mould around the freezer seal is normal if it has built up over a long period of time or has stood in damp environments. Normally hot soapy water can clear this right up. The ice taste would probably be resolved by fitting or changing the water filter, and / or cleaning the ice maker module located at the top of the freezer section and any route that the ice would take. Cleaning solutions for ice makers are available you just might need to call a local engineer for some advice on where to get some in your area. Hope this helps.
