Question about Sony KP-51WS500 51" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Colors out of alignment and screen bending

I have the same problem it seems as a few other people here.

I have a 4 year old st and all of a sudden I noticed the colors out of sync and the top and lower screen bending.

I have removed the rear cover and cleaned the lenses and tried to adjust one with the wing nut didn't make any difference.

Can i fix this myself or do I have to call in help?

Re: colors out of alignment and screen bending

The wing nuts you moved are for focusing the lens. more than likely you will need to replace the stk ics in your tv they are located on the signal board with 2 large heat sinks. they should say stk392-??? i do believe it is stk392-510 for sony. all you need to do is replace these and should be good to go

The screen seems to have two of the same image, green and red.

The fix is to replace the two Convergence IC's( STK392-110's) with STK392-150's. They are located to the right side of the chassis and mounted to large heat sinks. Be also on the look out for some burnt resisters and or discolored resistors that failed becuase of the IC's failing. These would be located just to the left of the heat sinks. If they are burnt or severly discolored, you will need to replace them with the exact valued resistors. In this high current circuit it is a must.
I hope this helps,

My picture is warped or bending in the middle

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit wiith instructions from the links below.

Color alignment

This sounds like a convergence problem. Would you describe the picture like a 3-D one? If you can solder, you should be able to fix this yourself. Let me know if you wish to attempt the repair and I'll supply additional details and instructions.

All color guns out of alignment

Needs convergence amps replaced. Sometimes resistors burn and need to be replaced. This repair requires soldering/desoldering equip. and a trained eye, but usually can be done for 175.00-325.00 at a reputable service center. Good luck, Russmann.

Image is totally distorted

Did you also replace the bias resistors required when you converted from STK392-110 to the higher STK392-xxx modules? If I wer you I would go back to the orginal modules only new ones. Then I would also get a schematic to test the voltage levels on the chips to make sure they are the same as on the schematic.
