How to wire and size a potential relay

To size a potential relay you must read the Start winding voltage (the BEMF)
which will be above the supplied line voltage, in this example I use 300 volts for math.
BEMF = 300 volts,
300v x ,50 = 150v minimum
300v x .80 = 240v maximum
300v x 1.20 = 360v continuous
So you want the Start capacitor to stay in the circuit to at least 150v BEMF or risk stalling, and you do not want the Star capacitor to stay in beyond 240v BEMF or risk
exploding the Start capacitor.
The 120% continuous rating is to oversize the coil in the potential relay that remains in the system to protect it .
If you have a compressor that is not running you will need to jump it with a Start capacitor(a large one) to the run capacitor for 1 second or so to bump start the compressor, then you can read the Start winding for the BEMF reading.

The compressor would not start so I replaced the starter relay and the compressor started and ran for a while but it was really hot. Now it runs til it overheats and the overload shuts it off. The...

what you need to check is for a locked up or very tigh compressor motor bearings, need to use amp clamp and clamp to the wire on overload on compressor the single common pin that is either top or bottom is where the overload goes. Look on plate/sticker on compressor and find what the LRA (locked rotor amp) is and see if amp draw is at or very near at LRA value

Note ;the windings can be good but the compressor can still be locked up

I need an inverter for my 1 hp air condition. how many watts do i need especially at start-up? modified or pure sine wave. Thank you.

The most important spec that you will need is the LRA rating. What this stands for is locked rotor amps. The LRA rating is what the AC unit will draw from the inverter while the compressor starts up. This is a very important spec when sizing an inverter for use with an AC unit. After you get this spec you will multiply it by the voltage and this will be the startup wattage needed by the inverter.

For example if your LRA is 60.6 amps if you multiply this by 115 you will get roughly 7000 watts at start-up.

The next thing to take into consideration for a AC unit is battery bank size. Your next step in setting up a system for use with an AC unit is finding a sufficient recharge source for the batteries. You will want to have a minimum of a 150 amp alternator to recharge a system with a small AC. I do not know whether you will be able o accommodate them.
Why don't you go for solar power as standby OR a small generator????????

Fan runs, compressor tries to start then kicks out on overload.

i am not familar with this model number..

1. are you using the right type of capacitor. you need a "start" capacitor not a run capitor. make sure that capacitor is the proper size.
2. have you tried a hard start kit?
3. is their oil in the new compressor?
4. was the old compressor for r-22 or 410a?
5. is the new compressor for the proper refrigerant?
6. is there refrigerant in the system?
7. is it wired right?
8. is this a heat pump? if so is your reversing valve operationing properly?
9. was the old compressor a mechanical or electrical failure?
if electrical did you install a new filter drier?
10. just because the new compressor is new does not mean it is good
11. do you have the proper voltage?

good luck

A hum followed by a click sound is an indication of a failure at the compressor. Possibly the compressor motor has gone into a locked rotor condition. A locked rotor condition can be checked using an ammeter. The name plate on the compressor will have a rating after LRA. If the ammeter reading is equal to the LRA rating the compressor is done. If it is a reading of about 80% of the LRA (locked rotor amperage) it is possible that a relay or capacitor has failed which is replaceable.

My nutone attic fan 69nr does not turn on

Check power from the t-stat to the motor or relay depending on how yours is configured for control voltage. If power is present at the motor. You will need a meter that can read amperage, take a ampdraw on the leads of the motor. See what this reading is, on the motor there should be a rating for LRA (locked rotor amps) if the amp draw exceeds this reading your motor is bad. You may also have a split phase capacitor installed which helps start the motor is so and you have a meter that reads in micro farads you could check the capacitor. the symbol for mico farads looks like a uf. Just make sure you discharge the capacitor to ground with a screw driver or insulated tool, if not it will shock you severly. Another thing you might look for is a reset button on the motor. Most likely this will be a red button somewhere near the bottom side of the motor.
