a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

the voicemail ring count has to be setup on your phone line thru your voicemail menu, and has nothing to do with the answering machine. if you don't want the answering machine to pickup, just shut it off. follow the prompt's for your voicemail settings, there you'll be able to set the amount of rings you want.
hope this helps.

SOURCE: Answerer won't pick up
I had the same problem after I had a new cable installed. I called the GE Customer Service: 1-800-720-2094 and spoke to a tech - here's what I was advised to do:
1. Unplug power from the Wall
2. Unplug power from the phone line
3. Wait 10 minutes
4. After 10 minutes, reconnect in REVERSE ORDER
5. Reconnect Phone Line FIRST
6. Reconnect Power Cable LAST
** I asked what happens if it still doesn't work. The tech asked me how long ago did I purchased the phone. I said 2-3 yrs ago. Then he said: "If it doesn't work, then the unit is defective". That's when I became skeptical. Anyway, try the above steps as I was advised and see if it works...I'm currently doing it and waiting for 10 minutes before reconnecting the unit in "reverse order". Good Luck.

SOLUTION: My handsets stopped ringing after power was stopped to the main base, too. I put one on the main base and that one started working but the others still didn't work. So I put the other phones on the main base while I called from my cell and let it ring. The other phones started to ring and work again.
