Remove the belt...(Take note of the direction of the belts installation direction) and make sure that the beater brush spins freely with the belt off. If it does not, check for hair or strings at each end where the bearings are located and pull them out with a pair of needle nosed pliers and /or cut them out with scissors. you can spray a little bit of WD40 around the bearings after the debris is removed. If it then spins freely, reinstall the belt the "same directional way" that it came off. It should work fine now.

The rubber drive belt keeps snapping. On inspection the metal shaft it rotates round seems to be rough/pitted. Is this normal?

It is not normal for a shaft to be rough & pitted. For safety reasons, I would suggest taking it to a repair shop and ask them if they can "dress" the shaft for you. Where I work on weekends, we do that all the time for repairs, and that will clean up the shaft for you. Now when you say you are putting a compatible belt on it, are you sure that it is compatible for your model? There are several different Hoover models out there and some of them have similar belts but they can be different sizes. Hope this helps!

My vax hoover burning herself what can ido nw ?

Sounds like unit could be plugged some where. If the motor is over worked that will cause it to over heat hence the smell. If it keeps smelling like this you may burn the motor up. Also see if there is suction when you start it up. If not it may be plugged somewhere.
If it's not plugged could be a bad bearing. See if the belts are working ok as well

Sent away 2new belts for dyson dco4 hoover after the one i replaced snapped .after awhile i emailed the firm who assured me were the correct size+ number, after a fight i got the belt onit was on 4or 5...

These are a difficult set of belts to replace. If you don't have everything just right when you reassemble the clutch or if there are any restrictions in the brush roll it will not work properly. It's best to test the clutch assembly in both positions after installing the new belts to make sure you did it correctly before putting it back in the vacuum.

Hoover Windtunnel Bagged upright vacuum is smoking and belt is slitting and burning

you probably need to replace your brushroll seeing that your belt is burning means motor is turning. first check you brushroll and see if there is an obstruction keeping it from spinning if its not spinning freely replace

My hoover spin brush steam vac brushes wont spin

Unplug vac turn it over and check for belts that drive the brushes
They are located at the very end of the brush They are probably missing
or they snapped and sitting in the housing somewhere. If you ar mechanically inclined not very difficult to replace. While you are at it clean all the hair and fibers that usually accumulate around the brush bushings
That is usually the culprit that wears down the belts
have fun

Old Hoover Convertible Upright U4109 keeps breaking belts. I just replaced the belts twice and both broke within 2 minutes.

Did you make sure the brush that the belt turns is free to move? Sometimes they get bound up and will not turn and as a result, the belts either burn or break. Remove the roller brush, clean the ends and remove any debris, lubricate the ends of the rollers where they are held by the stationary brackets and re-install with belt in correct position. Belt must be installed in the proper manner as well.

How do I replace the drive belt in the hoover u6401?

Remove the plate from the vacuum's underside. You will see fourscrews or two clips that attach the plate to the vacuum. Removingthe plate will give you access to where the belts are running. Remove the old belts and replace with new belts. The hoover self-propelled models use two different belts. One is a flat belt Hoover #38528035 and the other is a V belt Hoover #38528034. You can find these belts at on these pages:

We have had three belts break on your hoover vaccum cleaner u5472-940. It is easy to replace, you just remove the plastic part over it, put belt on wheel and then put it back on. Any idea on why the belt...

sometimes when you buy belts from the walmart or target, they are not at the correct specification and they brake as soon as you turn on the machine. i would suggest that you buy these belts from the company.
