Release the opener from the door and operate the door manually. You can also operate the opener and this should give you a good idea where the problem lies. I think you have a door problem.

Why does garage door opener only move a few inches?

Check the spring above the door, mine would go up a couple of inches and we found that the spring had broke.

My Craftsman garage door opener opens the door fine, then the door rolls back about 6 inches. I little history - this started after I replaced the drive cogs in the unit.

This is an unusual complaint and I have an idea your door is opening just a little too far. On the side of the motor unit you will find the 'up limit' control. Turn this a complete turn in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. See how this works and you may have to tweak it a bit to get it right.

Check your door springs. One may be broken. Also check the drive gear. It is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor.

Craftsman 1/2 HP garage opener opens only 6 inches

Remove the cover and check the drive gear. It is white nylon and is just in front of the motor. It may be stripped. Take a close look at those door springs. They can sometime appear to be okay when one is broken.

Craftsman garage door does not open all the way stops @12 inches

You most likely have a broken door spring. Release the door from the opener and try lifting it by hand. Look above the door for the springs.

I have a Craftsman garage door opener and just replaced the plastic gears. I followed the step by step directions but the door is now only opening 2-3 inches, reversing and then going back down. any ideas?

I managed to troubleshoot this myself and got my door working. The problem was that the black rpm wheel was not far enough down on the gear shaft. By unscrewing the screws on the final piece of the assembly on the shaft and then pushing it all more firmly toward the motor and rescrewing in place, I made it so the door operates beautifully.

I would try jumping a wire across the white & red terminal to see if your safety sensors are working Properly! If your door opens you have a loose connection or faulty sensors.
