The compressor motor is rattling around in it's shell. It had mounts, but they wear out. It may be ok, but I would price replacing the compressor, or the whole unit, depending on what shape it is in.

SOURCE: compressor making a loud noise, freezer cannot cool

It sounds to me like the internal relief valve is lifting due to discharge pressure being to high such as it a system that is over charged with refrigerant. Have the system tested for pressures on high and low sides. If someone has serviced this unit recently there may be to much of a charge in the system. Also check the name place for the proper refrigerant and charge .

SOURCE: kenmore top freezer fridge does not cool but freezer works

Turned refrigerator off for 8 hours, let the frost melt and the fan in the freezer worked again. The compressor now only has a soft clunk when it goes off.

SOURCE: REFRIGERATOR IS MAKING A BUZZING SOUND, not cooling

You have one of two problems going on. Your fan is spinning at hitting the sides. Or your compressor is shot which seems to be more the problem and even though it is cold the humming sound is a warning for you that the compressor is shot and it is more affordable to replace the fridge then the compressor. Sometimes compressor can cost more then the fridge.

Check the rubber mounts under the compressor and look for any lines touching the sides of the cabinet. The gurgling and clunking are often normal. good luck. Roger

I have a Kenmore 106.74253400 top freezer when it stops running it clunks multiple times and shakes though it's cooling properly.

The clunking noise, or shattering.. isn't likely to ever become a problem as far as cooling goes.... It will be more than likely try-your-patience than anything else . The compressor has springs located inside which are used to reduce the piston-travel when the unit reaches temperature and shuts off. Strange as it may sound, it won't cause the unit any harm.

Kenmore refrigerator makes clunking sound when motor shuts off. Repairman says it has a "broken leg". Wanted to replace the compressor. Can it be repaired WITHOUT replacing the motor?

Hi,
Maybe... but it would take some "farmer rigging" to do it....most repair man have no idea how to just make things work anymore...do you know someone that is very good at making things work in a round about way???
Even getting a rag or something to pad underneath it may stop the clunking for the time being... giving you time to get money together at least for the repair...
It just depends on where and how badly the leg is broken...the unit is still very funtional... you just need to stop it from clunking...

What is the clunking noise made after the refrigerator stops running? Its a Kenmore and is 10 yrs old. We have thoroughly cleaned behind and beneath the refrigerator and now the noise seems louder.

The clunking noise you hear , is probably when the compressor shuts off , due to temp reached or when it goes into defrost . An internal motor mount spring , inside the compressor , is broken ( rusted and broke ) . The refrig can go on working for years , without any problem , except noisey , when it cuts off . To stop the noise , replaceing the compressor is the only option . I have heard of placeing objects under 1 leg of the compressor , to " re-adjust " the ballance , but thru my experience , another spring broke , causing more knocking .

After the compressor runs it makes a loud clunking sound when it stops running. The sound comes from the compressor.

My guess is that it is running on high head probably caused by a dirty condenser. Try cleaning that. The noise itself is the actual compressor and motor bouncing around inside the hermetic can (what you call the compressor).
Good Luck

Amana refridgerator mdl abl2222fes knock noise

sounds like the compressor vibration dampers are wearing out. the dampers are the rubber washers that seperate the compressor from the chassis of the fridge. when they start to deteriorate, and the compressor kicks on, it will bounce against something in the chassis, causing a knocking noise.
