Espressione Retro has worked beautifully for a year, but now after
sitting unused for 2 months while I was away from home, very little
water will come through the head when I attempt to make coffee. Tried
the steam wand (to perhaps prime the pump and determine whether or not
it draws water) and that seems to work as normal,. The Machine just
doesn't get very much pressure of volume of water through the head.
Also can't see how to remove the shower head to clean and check for
clogs at that end of the system. Help?

Stopped brewing.  I thought it might be clogged and I've tried cleaning it.  Any suggestions?

Exacetly the same problem after not using the machiene for 6 weeks or so. It will not make any coffee, but the steam works fine. The pump works as normal as long as the steam valve is open and water can flow freely. If you close the steem valve the pump becomes muffled as though it is trying to pump against a blockage. I think it is probably an air lock but have no idea how to fix the problem.

I was away for a week and have the exact same problem as noted above. The steamer works, the coffee grinder works, but no water flows through the coffee. The red coffee bean warning light comes on. It appears that the pump is not working.

Same problem here except I got it when I was descaling the machine with a product I have used before and worked fine.
Appears to be working properly in any other way but is not brewing the coffee.
Sound like it will brew but then it struggles like it is clogged and stops.

Regarding the retro: you need a special tool to remove brew head screen.
If you are handy you can try a spanner or spring clip as this has worked for some.
If that doesn't work you can send for repair to:

Sounds like you might have coffee oil build up. I would suggest soaking the Brew Head Screen, unscrew from the brew head where the coffee oils come into contact with machine, and filter holder in a coffee oil remover by or dezcal.
Remove the screw if your filter basket has one and do not screw too tight when putting back together or it will happen again.

I had the same problem.  Try putting a descaling tablet in hot water and in the tank.  Then try the rinse cycle over and over.  I did this a couple of times and it finally cleared up.  When it was clogged I could see the calcium built up on a little tube right inside, and now it is clear.

I have the briel multi pro EG 281 PG/APG. When I try make espresso, water comes from the frother and not from the brew head. Any suggestions on what the problem might be? Thanks!

sounds as though your brew head is clogged. when was the last time you descaled your machine? even if you've recently done it, it would not hurt it to do it again. descaling will eventually clean out the head and lines to the head and thus, your brew head should be despensing the coffee again. the reason it is having water coming from the frother is because under pressurization the water is shot into the areas that are open for releasing the pressure in the form of water. if one or the other outlets are clogged, then the next one available takes the pressure from it as it is re-routed to the only open source as your frother.

When it is brewing it make a loud noise during the brewing

Any coffee brewer will bring water to a boil and expel the hot water over grounds or into a container. This water is sometimes under great steam pressure and is released by the user with a knob, handle, etc. These pressurised machines all make noises but should be within the normal operating range while using the machine. If it makes noise other than when in use then there may be an issue. Have a technician check for safety reasons as you are dealing with a 'steam BOILER' . For drip makers there should be no pressure other than the normal 'glug-glug' sounds while brewing. A commercial brewer will just have water sprinkling down into the basket and possible 'whine' noise as the tank refills. But if it's not your normal noise then have a tech check it out.

It turns on makes noise but it doesn't brew

  • Clean the puncture needle with a paper clip. It has 2 holes.
  • Turn unit off for a few minutes, remove and replace the water tank. Turn back on.
  • If all fails unplug, remove water tank, turn over and slap it on it's bottom. I know, sounds silly but it works!

Brew head leaks at gasket, causing some water to bypass the coffee and leak around outside of brew head

The filter holder not pushed far enough ino lock position, also the basket doesn't quite hold 2 level spoons of coffee.
Thanks, David

Coffee Machine Brewing Water

Try an experiment - brew a test cup, but use only a small amount of grounds in the brew basket (use a paper filter) [or else, put the grounds in the gold tone filter basket]. See if the machine makes coffee (albeit weak coffee). If it does not make coffee, see if the water is draining properly from the brew basket, or if it is leaking over the sides of the brew basket. Also, make sure the lid to the brew basket is completely open and in the correct position.

If you still get water only in the caraffe, replace the brew basket. The part costs about $11.95 with shipping - or even call Cuisinart to see if your 3-year warranty will cover the issue.

Espresso Machine

Possibly, if it is leaking from the bottom only, and if you have a Domus Due model, you might just need a new water reservoir as the water reservoirs are a different system than all of the other briel machines and a new reservoir will usually fix the problem of leaking on the bottom in the Domus Due machines. Something with the seal on the reservoir.
You can order just a water reservoir by contacting the service center at:
41 Woodbine St
Bergenfield NJ 07621
ph 201-439-1700
If your machine is leaking over the filter handle, brew head etc, that could be the coffee oils have built up in the Brew Head Screen and/or filter basket itself. For that, remove the Brew Head Screen and soak along with the Filter Basket in a coffee oil remover (not descaler) you can get the Cafiza powder at or any other brand and then use a brush to clean it after soaking. If you have the Briel filter basket with a screw in the middle, please remove the screw and clean in there as it tends to get clogged. Then just be sure not to screw it too tight again as this can cause leaking.
I hope the info was helpful.
