If you have a brand new printer , you should have the INK cartridges that comes with unit. just use them right out the box . AJ

I am going to buy a new computer today with Window 7. Do I need to do anything to make sure my HP Photosmart D7160 Ink Jet printer works?

Yah, go on support.hp.com and verify that it has a Windows 7 driver installation for it. Some printers from HP do not. Some have a driver that came with windows 7 for usb only, in which case you can hack it to add Standard TCP/IP port once it has been installed USB. Of course that might support ALL of the things that the printer can do.

Prints "muddy"--have aligned, cleaned printheads, made sure cartidges are seated and full--what now?

See in printer properties you can set for poor paper qualty like blotter paper quality,, this will use less ink flow and less likely to bleed
