SOURCE: Washer: Thundering herd of elephants. Dryer: Increased drying time

if vent is clean, did you push it too far back afterward and flatten vent hose? also blower fan may be loose on motor shaft resulting in slower rpm also may be excess lint in blower housing ..washer suspect lower bearing although not sure what a stampeding herd of elephants would sound like ..if noise is on spin if during agitation suspect transmission gears ..both will require new transmission ..if noise is more of a knocking noise possible broken bolt in basket trunion block remove agitator to ck

Your shock absorbers are problably broken and need to be replaced. Take off the bottom inspection panel by removing the 2 screws on the bottom of the panel and pull the piece down and out. Then take a look inside the machine in the bottom middle on both sides. There should be a shock absorber on each side and these are plastic. Check to see if they are broken at either end and if they are, go to your local appliance repair shop and buy/order a new pair. The new ones are slightly upgraded by making the body out of metal and the rest out of plastic. Instalation instructions come in the package as well as a pair of new absorbers. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: dryer makes screeching noise..dries the clothes

at the top of the drum there is a felt pad with 3 white nylon glides attached to it. if this is worn, and it does wear, it will make a screeching noise like you described because it changes the postion of the drum and it will also appear like it is loose. you can purchase this part as a kit along with the glue to hold it on and it is not an expensive part. hope this helps.

SOURCE: I have a Fridgedaire

The symptoms that you describe sounds like the spider arms that support the drum are broken. It is a very expensive repair. Get a few estimates, before deciding whether it is worth repairing or replacing. Sorry.

Pretty difficult to help without a MAKE, and MODEL. Most dryers the drum comes out the FRONT and not the back. Unplug the machine before you do anything.

A loose belt often makes a squeak that pulsates with the clothes hitting the paddles in the drum. It's probably the upper drum glide or rear bearing. If it's a constant screech coming from the front, it's probably the glide. If the noise seems to be in the back, suspect the bearing. You might check for a sock or something small that is stuck somewhere between the drum and the dryer.

Neither are very difficult to repair.

Loud screeching noise

The problem is usually caused by dry drum roller.
You need to remove the drum and lube or replace the rollers

Very loud metal on metal screeching noise maytag model LDE8414ACE

Warning! To avoid personal injury or even death, always disconnect your appliance from its power source--that is, unplug it or break the connection at the circuit breaker or fuse box--before you do any troubleshooting or repair work on your appliance. Also, because some components may have sharp edges, use caution while working on your appliance.

Loud metal-metal "screeching" sounds will eminate from the front bearing glides, (click on link below), for a picture of the glides. Link provided by www.repairclinic.com, they provide repair parts, disassembly procedures and diagrams.
You may also want to inspect for foreign objects in the front and rear drum seals and in the blower.
Drum rollers may sometimes cause loud noises also.

Amana dryer loud noise

remove the lowe acesss panel( 2 5/16 screws) wiht the panel removed and a flashlight in hand, turn on the dryer and watch it tumble. you should be able to pinpoint where its coming from. its either the rear roller supports, the front drum glide assy's, or the tension pulley in ehich the belt its wrapped arund(develops a rut in which the belt has cut into it causing horrible screeeching noise, heck to replace all three of the components is problavle ony 50 bucks or so
