I have a Troy Bilt weed eater and am having a problem. It starts with the choke on, but it will not run with the choke off.

It will run for a few minutes with the choke on halfway. If I keep reving it, then it will usually continue to run, it just won't reach maximum rpm

I cleaned the carburetor and the air filter as well as the spark arrester. It will now run on half choke at full throttle, but if I take it completely off choke, then it only runs if I give gas very slowly.

I also changed the spark plug, cleaned the air filter and sprayed the carburetor with cleaner when it took it apart as well as used my air nozzle in each passage. It now will run pretty well on half choke(good enough to weed eat) and idles and runs at slow speed with the choke all the way off. If I take my time giving it gas, it will gradually pick up rpm with no choke, but the power is not what it should be. At least I can use it now.

What happens if you just leave the choke on halfway?

Ths problem is possibly indicating the need for a new fuel pump diaghram in the Zama carburetor. A carb rebuild kit installed correctly should alleviate this problem and greatly improve throttle response on the unit. The ethanol in the fuel nowadays plays havoc on carb parts and they become less flexible and more brittle, thus affecting performance and leading to problems with throttle response and carburetor functions such as this.

I'd clean the carburetor. Try injector cleaner additive for the fuel tank. Mix in same proportion as directions on bottle. Maybe a little higher ratio.

If this doesn't clean it out after a tank full, take it apart and clean it.

Oh, by the way, have you cleaned the air filter lately?

  • Samuel Charles Spriggs May 08, 2009

I would still try the injector cleaner.

If that doesn't work we'll go to the ignition system.

By the way, have you installed a new spark plug?

Troy built weed eater won't feed line

Check the size of the line,(OD), make sure you are using the correct size, sometimes cheap line will be problematic, also, you said you are re-stringing it, try a new batch of string, the old string inside the hub can get chaffed and will stick to itself...

Weedeater starsts and ildes won't run or accerate

It sems to me like your engine chokes itself on a too rich fuel mix, a clogged air filter may cause this condition. Of course there is always the possibility of a needed carburetor adjustment but I would definitely check the air filter first if this machine used to work fine.

Weed eater does not start

I had a similar problem with my troy-bilt weedeater. I tried replacing the sparkplug, replaced the fuel filter and etc. It still would not start. I looked at the troubleshooting guide in the owner's manual and it listed a possible cause as a clogged spark arrestor. I cleaned out the spark arrestor by taking it off and cleaning it with a wire brush. Now it runs like brand new again. I hope this helps.
