Try pressing the F8 key at the startup (after power-on and before the logo comes up).
Choose "Fail-safe" mode using the arrow keys on your keyboard and press enter twice.

When windows is in failsafe mode there is a number of ways you can fix the problem.

Try this:
Open "My computer", right-click on your harddrive and choose "properties"
From there scan the drive for errors (mark the 2repair automatically") and fix them.
Reboot the pc...

Good luck

Why a black screen on xps l701x w7 i7 1.73

Black screen - no flashing white cursor in the upper left corner - no picture at all, i.e. the initial Dell start-up screen doesn't show up either:
- LCD is dead or isn't getting a signal - not an easy fix; or
- the LCD isn't being sent a signal - holding down the function [Fn] key and press display Function key to toggle through its settings (LCD panel only, Rear VGA output only, both LCD and VGA output)

Black screen - flashing white cursor in the upper left corner - the screen goes black after the windows loading screens come up but before the windows login screen comes up - it is probably a windows video driver problem. Try starting in Windows Safe Mode with VGA. Press [F8] after the Dell startup screen disappears to access the windows startup menu

My laptop won't start, stuck on black screen. i have been trying to start my gateway laptop andevery time the welcom finishs' running it defaults back to the black sreen. why is this?

This could mean that the copy of Windows installed in your computer is either corrupted or damage and reinstalling or repairing your Windows should fix the problem.
But try doing System Restore first on safe mode before doing a Windows reinstallation or repair to save you from loosing all you files in your computer.

To do system restore on safe mode:

1. Restart your computer and when the Dell Logo comes up and keep pressing F8 until an option shows
2. Use arrows to navigate then choose safe mode
3. Click start button then choose All programs or Program depending on the Windows installed in your computer
4. Click on System tools then choose System Restore
5. Follow the intructions on the System Restore windows on how to restore your machine back to a previous date before this issue happen.
6. Your computer will automatically restart after restore is done

If the safe mode doesnt work then your last option is to reinstall or repair your windows:

1. Press F1 to go to BIOS then change boot priority - make sure your DVD drive is the first boot
2. When your done changing boot sequence press F10 to save and exit
3. Insert you Windows CD and and a meesage will appear on a black scrren "Press and key to continue" press any key. Windows file will load and options for Repair or Installation will appear
4. Choose 1 of the option then follow the instruction (Installing a fresh copy of windows is recommended)

Hope this information will be helpful. Thank you for using FIXYA.

Vista boots just Black screen with cursor even in safe mode

Yes, this is a known issue with Vista. You need to back-up your data, format your hard drive and re-install Vista from the beginning.
There is really no use trying to repair it: it is damaged.
After you re-install Vista, do not forget to install service packs from microsoft.com.

Latop d620 worked ine but now screen is lack unless in safe mode

Now I don’t know how unplugging it or moving it would cause that problem but it does sound like you might have an issue with the refresh rate and or screen resolution at a setting that is to high for the screen to display (safe mode only loads windows core components and minimal set of drivers like basic vga driver for display which is why it probably works in safe mode)

If you are running windows XP then try the following:

Ok try hitting F8 key before XP logo appears for boot menu then select "enable vga mode" then after you get to a desktop go to display settings and lower the screen resolution and refresh rate setting
(refresh rate should be at 60hz) resolution could be different depending on which screen you have there... but try 1024x768 just to be safe then reboot into normal mode and see if it works and if it does then you can adjust the resolution to what it was before problem occurred

If you are running Windows Vista then boot from the Vista CD and select “repair my computer” and then “fix startup problems” and it should do it for you
