What is the AGP aperture size? Can I reset to 128,000?

Can i reset the agp aperture size to 128,000?

The MB has more than 1.5 gigs of RAM. I believe the AGP video card has 256 K - however, this aperature setting apparently pertains to MB RAM which is reserved for use wih the video card. I am trying to set up my new RADEON 2400 PRO video card from VisionTek, to be able to process Folding at Home proteins with the new GPU processor/simulator. I am having error messages to the effect of "UNSTABLE_MACHINE".

It depends on how much physical RAM you have. Whatever you set the aperture size to, it should draw that much from your RAM to allocate towards video memory, so if you only have 128mb of RAM, I wouldn't set it to 128.

Use of agp

The primary advantage of AGP over PCI is that it provides a dedicated pathway between the slot and the processor rather than sharing the PCI bus. In addition to a lack of contention for the bus, the point-to-point connection allows for higher clock speeds. AGP also uses sideband addressing, meaning that the address and data buses are separated so the entire packet does not need to be read to get addressing information. This is done by adding eight extra 8-bit buses which allow the graphics controller to issue new AGP requests and commands at the same time with other AGP data flowing via the main 32 address/data (AD) lines. This results in improved overall AGP data throughput.

In addition, to load a texture, a PCI graphics card must copy it from the system's RAM into the card's framebuffer, whereas an AGP card is capable of reading textures directly from system RAM using the Graphics Address Remapping Table (GART). GART reapportions main memory as needed for texture storage, allowing the graphics card to access them directly.[The maximum amount of system memory available to AGP is defined as the AGP aperture.

Have gforce4 ti video card NO PICTURE of any kind screen says no signal detected

The GeForce4 Ti has two rear ports. 1 HDMI and 1 VGA. Try plugging into each. Video signal should be sending out of one of the ports. If neither port is sending out signal than you'll need to trick the bios.
Suggest you remove the Gforce4 Ti AGP card from the MB so you can regain video display and change the settings within the bios. Once you have display, enter the bios menu. Do you have your manual? Enter bios menu by pressing the "Delete" key every 2 seconds until the bios menu loads. Open, Integrated Peripherals, see top of page 3-11. Set Primary Graphic's Adapter to: [AGP]. Than go to the top of page 3-10. Change the AGP Aperture Size to as low as possible or to: [Disabled] "preferred".
AGP 8x Support set to: [Enabled]. Save your settings and exit the bios. The system will restart. Press and hold the power on / off button until your system shuts off. Install your GeForce4 Ti AGP video card. Double check your video card! Some NVIDIA cards need external power above what the AGP slot can provides. Some use a power connector like the floppy drive uses. Other look just like a hard disk drive power connector: 4-pin Molex. If none is found don’t worry about it.

Cheers!
Mike

Radeon 9550 + AGP issues on MSI KT4V

First of all, why do you bother to change all these spec? Secondly, since your screen flicked, I would suggest you just leave them like that. Your PC is just as old as mine, don't mess around with it too much.

P4s800d x agp apeture size only 256 i have a 512

Sadly no, updated bios wouldnt help. The motherboard was designed for a 256mb AGP card max.

New motherboard is about your only option, or sell the card and get one with 256mb. of memory.

Sorry for the news, thank you for trying Fixya!

AGP installation problems

If you do see the BIOS post but the screen turns black when your OS is loading, then the AGP-card should be OK. HOWEVER, you do need to uninstall your MB-video drivers before installing a new GPU.

Problem with FX500 VGA

In your bios, please enable the
AGP 3.0 Calibration cycle. Also, make sure your Aperture size is correct to the size of the card.

Also, in bios under PC health, check to see what the VAGP is running at, if it is not 1.5v, then your card is not getting enough power.

Also, in the advanced chipset features, make sure that the Init Display First is set to AGP.

When these are all set, reboot and go back into bios, check to see if you can change AGP to 8x now.
