System won't complete the RESTART process

System Board: Biostar K8M800-M2 w/Award 6.00PG 10/12/07

If I do a SHUTDOWN, the system will do a normal shutdown and turn the power OFF.

If I do a RESTART, the system will go thru the shutdown process then just sit there with a blue screen but will not initiate the startup portion. I then have to manually turn the power off and back on to complete the RESTART process.

Any suggestions? Any BIOS tweaks that might help? I've tried several but no change.

Other than this the system works just fine.

Thanks for your help.

I should have included the OS: Win2K Pro w/SP4. Includes all the latest OS and software/driver updates. And yes, it is the LIGHT BLUE screen.

I'm a retired IT Consultant and can usually fix this particular issue as I've faced it before on other systems; usually caused by a BIOS setting but this one eludes me.

Note that the system / Windows works perfectly when booting from the power switch. It just won't REBOOT without turning the power off, then back on.

    Thanks for the help...

It has happened that the operating system will cause this. I have seen it quite a few times. The user presses restart and it just hangs, the screen goes blank and nothing. Sometimes, the screen stays a light blue. If it is a dark blue, you definately have a software problems. If possible, backup, and reinstall the operating system. Another possibility is to download any missing patches, and updates....also, make sure you don't have any viruses, worms, or corrupt system files.

Do a check disk (chkdsk) using either:

1) Go to My Computer > right click on the drive with windows that won't boot > click properties > go to tools tab > click error checking > tick both boxes and click check now > it will say windows needs to restart, allow it too.

OR

2) Boot up using the installation disk... I will need the OS version (XP, Vista etc.) to tell you how to do that.

Try checking the BIOS settings some motherboards have some settings to power on the PC via network cable or modem. If this setting is turned on and you're connected to a router or modem (cable or dsl), it may be turning on your computer as soon as you turn it off.

Biostar P4M900-M7 SE BIOS ROM Checksum Error

The bios upgrade procedure stopped at half , leaving the bios corrupted. The computer now cannot do a regular boot procedure, this is the reason why it cannot recognise some device. If you are still able to boot from floppy, you can restart bios upgrade procedure from floppy. Just download floppy version upgrade and re do setup. Even if you do not find latest bios version, just download a floppy upgrade that is working, so that you can restart your machine regularly , and then do the update to latest version.
If you are not able to complete the bios setup, the only way to fix your motherboard will be flashing the CMOS chipset with a chip programmer device that will reinstall bios straight into cmos chipset.
You can have this done at the service point, in this case consider also replacing your motherboard.
