Look on the indoor unit and see what they do you hav common from trans former yellow for compressor white for elect heat then reversing valve usually orange green for fan on the out door unit board you can tell what is common and what is for heat

It should be a 2 wire hook up. If you can obviously tell what to wires were used (meaning the rest are wrapped around) then it should be easy. Turn off unit at tstat. Turn off power to condenser. Open panel and locate likely a blue and yellow wire but regardless the color they should be the only wires that are not landed somewhere. The can be traced to the sides of the contactor. The high voltage goes to the bottom, low voltage to the sides of contactor. Wire nut your 2 "obvious" wires. If you can not tell what 2 colors were used you will have to look in furnace/air handler. TURN POWER OFF FIRST. Typically you'll have 2 sets of low voltage in the furnace. One goes to the tstat the other to the condenser. Track the wire that comes in with the copper through the wall. This is likely your wire that goes outside. Whatever 2 colors are used inside you must use outside. Good Luck!!

Heat pump compressor/fan/air handler runs heat for 30 secs, then all stop. (Trane XR 11 HP w/honeywell T8411R thermostat). Capacitor good, new 5-2-1 hard-start kit added but didn't solve problem.


Sounds like low pressure. Are you losing low voltage to condenser? Backup heat not working likely due to a setting error or possibly a wiring issue.

I want to replace a Honeywell Q674L with a Honeywell RTH6580WF for my heat pump. Which wire is the common or C wire?


The old mercury Q674's didn't require a common terminal, so if there's not an extra wire in the bundle you'll have to fish one up... Inside the old Trane, there should be either a terminal strip with the appropriate terminal designations or possibly a bundle of color coded wires. If they are wires, originally they may have had individual tags on them, but if there are none, you're going to have to refer to the wiring diagram for the correct color for transformer common. Or... find the secondary of the transformer to determine the correct one, then extend it up to the new digital stat.

Changing From Trane to Honeywell


Color ---> New stat terminal

Blue--------C
Green------G
Yellow-----Y
Orange----O
Red---------R
White------E and Aux.
Tan---------unused, tape and secure it

If there is Rh and Rc or R and Rh, these terminals should be jumpered together.

I used to install Weathertrons eons ago. Whatever you do DO NOT connect the blue wire to the B terminal, you will short out your low voltage transformer immediately when you switch to heat

How to set a NOMA HTM311A thermostat


Go to the furnace, and see what the black is connected to. If it is not the Y terminal, disconnect it from the Y terminal at the thermostat. While you have the furnace open, check for a blown fuse inline to the transformer or on the control board. If the black was connected to the common or the transformer, and you connected it to the Y, and turned the thermostat to cool, you would have a direct short across the transformer output. You can use a black wire to control the A/C, but both ends need to be connected to a Y terminal.

If you still remember the where the 4 wires were connected to the White Roger thermostat, take note of the name of the terminals the 4 wires are connected to. That may help as sometime the colour of the wires are not always correct.

Or you really want to test it out:
connect RED wire to GREEN wire should turn on the fan
connect RED wire to WHITE wire should turn on the heat


Did you disconnect the power at the furnace first? Maybe you blew a low voltage fuse.

Make sure you increase the heat setting to go above the room temperature.

Note: W2 is most often used for heat pumps to control what is called emegency heat or Auxillary heat, and most often will use the white wire.
Y (yellow) often (blue) is used, controls cooling unit (outdoor condensing unit) also is used for heat pump heat.
Y2 (no standardized wire color, usually whatever wire color is available) controls second stage cooling.
G (Green) controls the fan "on" operation of the furnace/air handler. Also often is used to start the blower for many electric furnaces.
C (common) most often brown but can also be black or other color available to installer.
O (orange) Energizes heat pump reversing valve for cooling (Trane and most other brands).
B (Blue) Energizes heat pump reversing valve for heating (Rheem, Ruud and Weatherking).

Your wiring concerns may be more with the thermostat wiring connections than the condensor connections. if you look inside the cover of the evaporator unit (usually called air handler) there should be a wiring diagram glued to the panel cover. This diagram will show all 3 units (stat,cndsr, airhndlr) and the wiring needed between them. Trane and Lennox are notorious for having the most wiring between components. You also need to be sure the stat is the correct type for the system (i assume this is a heat pump system) and there can be as many as 9 wires from stat to system and 6 wires from inside to outside units. Also, the stat will have a wiring diagram with it that shows most typical system wiring including the wiring between in and out units. Your best bet (if you have no diagram on the unit or with the stat) is to call trane and have their tech division fax a diagram to you. Goodluck,Macgivor

You have the contactor wired improperly. You need to go to the low voltage wires coming from the thermostat. The wire combination you gave sounds like you are looking at the high voltage coming off of the capacitor. If it wont shut off you most likely have the red and yellow wires crossed.
