Shinerich patio heater control valve malfunctioning

When I ignite the pilot lite and then turn the control valve knob to light the main burner, the gas quits. I can hold the knob in, and it will function normally but once I release the knob the gas quits & flame goes out.

I had the same problem and fixed it with a small piece of Aluminum foil, an adjustable wrench, and a #2 screwdriver... If you're "handy", this is an easy 30 minute fix. I included a picture that may help you visualize the "fix" before attempting. In short, I'm not certain what happened or why/how it broke, but if you remove the valve/manifold you can blow air into the gas inlet (with your mouth) and adjust the knob and you will see that only when it's all the way pushed down you can blow air through the valve, otherwise n air/gas can not get through. Thats why the pilot will light, and when you let the knob out the flame goes out. If that is your problem, this fix will work. After I put the foil (explained below) to extend the brass pushrod that allows gas to enter the manifold, it worked as expected allowing air/gas to enter only when on "light" and through the LO to High sweep.

Step 1) Shut off gas and remove tank.

Step 2) Remove the black gas On/Off knob (pulls off)

Step 3) Remove the three on thumb screws inside the tank storage area to allow the entire top/heater mesh to slide down (like intended to store it, or how it came shipped in the box). Sliding this down will expose the bracket the manifold/valve mounts to.

Step 4) Remove the spring clip and washers from the stem on the valve. Remember the order, and dont lose any parts as this works your igniter. (I usually take a picture with my phone on these types of things, so I can recall how they went.)

Step 5) Carefully remove all the gas lines from the valve and the grounding wire at the rear of the manifold.

Step 6) Remove the two small Phillips screws that hold the valve to the bracket.

Step 7) Remove the valve from the unit.

Step 8) Remove the two small #2 Phillips screws that hold the aluminum and the brass parts together on the valve.

Step 9) Give a slight tug and the two pieces will come apart easily. A small aluminum part may fall out; this is okay as it only goes in one way.

Step 10) Take a small piece of aluminum foil 1 1/2 inches by 7 inches or so, and wadd it tight into a ball. I used pliers to get it tight and small (bigger than BB, but smaller than the end of a pencil eraser) You will see that it needs to go inside the channel where the brass stem will slide in and out of the "slotted" tube on the stem.

Step 11) Put it back together and try the "blow test" again to see if the aluminum ball was the right size to make it work ...again. I had to do this a few times to get the right size "extension". Also, be sure to blow into the "main" gas inlet and adjust the gas control knob through the push in and "light" the pilot mode all through the Hi/Lo sweep.

Reverse your steps and give it a try. Mine lights every time and works perfect. ...actually better than new, as it was always a task to light.

Check that the pilot light is directed at the thermocouple, a copper 'tube' that heats up when the pilot light is lit. You should be able to see a copper coloured small tube that the pilot light is directed at - if the pilot flame is not heating that tube then the main burner will not light.

If the thermocouple is being heated correctly, then it could be a fault with the thermocouple itself (can be replaced) or the gas valve.

If the pilot flame is not heating the end of the thermocouple you should be able to adjust its position so that the pilot flame is directed at it more accurately.

PILOT LIGHT COMES ON BUT WHEN YOU TURN THE KNOB TO ON IT DOES NOT LIGHT UP THE CIRCLE PLATE IN THE HEATER. IT JUMPS AND THE FIRE COMES OUT THEN IT GOES OUT.


I'm not sure what unit you are troubleshooting but if the main burner is igniting and that main burner flame is blowing out the pilot flame, it's possible the pilot flame orifice needs to be cleaned. The orifice can get stopped up and produce a weak pilot. And I've seen a pilot lite, but be blown out by the combustion of the main burner igniting. Now you stated IT JUMPS. If you mean the pilot flame jumps, as if it gets large then weak and goes out, then the gas valve is giving you trouble and may need to be replaced.

Why does burners and pilot forced off after burners are engaged


We get asked this question many times.

If you light your pilot light, hold in the button and then when you release it and the pilot light goes out, generally you need a new thermocouple. Gas repairs can only be undertaken by a qualified gas technician so you can't do this job yourself.

The thermocouple is a safety device that recognises that the pilot has a good flame and is enough to ignite the main burners. The thermocouple open that valve to the burner.

In limited circumstances the thermocouple doesn't need replacing, either the shield that aims the flame to the thermocouple has become dislodged, or the pilot jet is a little blocked by debris. Either way, having the appliance serviced by a qualified gas fitter is the way to go. I am sure you will have seen news stories about explosions caused by gas leaks and faulty appliances.

My uniflame has two burners and one does not ignite. Everything seems to be tight. What can I do to get this to ignite when turning ignition knob? Thanks!


When you say two burners, I believe you are referring to the pilot flame and the main burner. The pilot flame has to light and heat the thermocouple befoe the main burner will ignite. The pilot flame will not light if: there is not enough gas in the tank, the pilot jet is clogged, or the regulator is bad. Check the tank to make sure it has gas. The next thing to check is the pilot jet. You have to take the heater apart, somewhat, to get to the pilot jet. The tube and the orifice need to be cleaned out, compressed air in a can and a pipe cleaner make the job a little easier. If this does not work, replace the reglator and hose.

Pilot light wont ignite on patio heater


It may be that your cylinder is malfunctioning, cylinder has a leak, or the pilot is clogged. Please see steps below to troubleshoot. Note:Regular maintenance is critical to the successful operation of your patio heater.
  1. Is the cylinder valve closed? If so, open the cylinder valve but not fully.
  2. Check to see if you can light it manually. If the unit lights manually but not with igniter, service or replace igniter switch.
  3. Ensure that there is no air in the gas line. Open the gas line and bleed it (pressing control knob in) for not more than 1 - 2 minutes or until you smell gas.
  4. There may be a blockage in the orifice or pilot tube? Bugs and spiders get into the pilot assembly, venturi tube and burner ports causing the unit to either not light or poor performance.
  5. Is the regulator hose pinched or kinked?
  6. Cleaning the pilot assembly.
  7. If the piezo igniter won't spark to light the pilot, check the wiring to the igniter, It may simply have lost it's ground. Slide the wire off the igniter prong (looks like a thick needle) on the pilot assembly and then push it back on. That usually will reestablish the ground.

The pilot seems to light but then when I turn the knob to ignite the main burner, the pilot goes out. Is there a technique to clean the igniting assembly?


let the pilot light burn for a few min and get hot after this try slowly moving the knob over to full burn. Sometimes it just need to heat up.

Pilot is lighting, but unit won't light


If the pilot light stays light after you relaease the knob, but your burner will not light then it most likely is the tip switch. Install a jumper wire across the tip switch connections and your burner should light, do not operate with jumper wire as this is bypassing the saftey feature.

You have a white scale buildup in the gas valve outlet blocking the main gas flow. Take the valve apart and clean it.

Propane patio heater ignition problem


I would change the thermocouple and here is why:

The thermocouple is the pilot's, well, co-pilot! It is the electronic device that senses if the pilot flame is hot enough to sustain burning the gas fuel from the burner. If the thermocouple thinks it's safe, then it keeps open the main gas valve located in the pilot assembly. If the thermocouple does not sense enough heat from the pilot flame (such as when the pilot is out), then the thermocouple shuts off the gas valve to the burners.
How the Thermocouple Works
So what is this thing and how does it work? Well the thermocouple (technically called a thermocouple junction) is a device that contains two metal wires welded at the ends and placed inside a protective metal case. The thermocouple sensor is found at the business end of the pilot flame and is designed to be placed in the hottest part of the flame. The other end is connected to the pilot valve body. As the thermocouple heats up, it produces a small amount of electricity and when it gets hot enough from the pilot, send a signal to open the gas valve by using a solenoid operated by a 24 volt transformer. The thermocouple calls the shots, and by converting heat to an electrical signal, it allows the gas valve to open or close. Once the gas valve is open, gas is then constantly supplied to the pilot and as required for the gas burners (as called for by the thermostat). If the pilot goes out, then the thermocouple gets cold and produces no electric signal to open the gas valve's solenoid and the gas valve shuts off the gas supply to the pilot and burners

Nexgrill patio heater won't stay lit


I called Nexgrill technical support at 1-800-913-8999. They are sending me a new thermo couple to keep the valve open when ignited - so the patio heater will stay on. I needed to give them the serial number (inside the propane tank door) and fax them a copy of the receipt.

You have to hold the button down for 30 seconds at least before turning the knob to ON. If you are doing this and it still goes out after you let up on the knob, then it needs a new flame sensor, or thermocouple. Same thing different names.
