Question about Refrigerators

Open Question

GE Artica cooling issues

Model # PSC25SGSA SS serial # LH421723 The icemaker/water started to go out. The temp in the freezer started to fluctuate, melting the ice. Turned off the icemaker. Now the temp in the ref. is doing the same, will not cool. The ref. side is struggling to stay at 44, freezer at 4. Come to find out, the block connection for the freezer door is corroded, with the door side white wire broken, causing the problems with the intermittent icemaker.

SOURCE: Stops cooling ice melts and leaks water on the floor

That model refrigerator uses the mother control board for deciding when defrost is to take place. It has no defrost timer or Adaptive Defrost Control like other refrigerators. This sounds like *********** board part number WR55X10942 is malfunctioning. The board decides most functions of your refrigerator. Until the board is replace I do not believe the problem will resolve itself. Thanks, Sea Breeze

SOURCE: GE PROFILE SIDE BY SIDE MOD PSS25MGN - NOT COLD - FOOD THAWING!

Sounds like a main control board defective .The one on your refrig WR55X10552 , is on a recall list .
http://www.scribd.com/doc/13371507/Ge-Motherboard-Concession-Letter
The new part number is WR55X10656 . I would suggest calling GE , to have them come out and check , as this part and labor , should be covered , as stated by the letter .

If the freezer or fresh food temperature is not getting set to the required setting.Or if its getting set for few seconds then again gets changed. Then in that case the defrost thermostat is the faulty part causing this problem.-------------- The thermostat is located on the side of evaporator coil. The evaporator coils are in the freezer section.---------- Before replacing any part try the manual defrost reset procedure. The procedure is as follows:---
First unplug the unit from main power outlet. Then empty whole unit completely. Then keep both the doors open. Wait for 24 hours. All the ice collected on the coils and in the freezer section will get melted. Clean the water from the sections. Then Connect the power cord of the unit to main power outlet after 24 hours/.Then set the temperature to normal in both fridge and freezer section. It will take near to 4 hours to get run in its proper cooling cycle. Then check, if the problem returns again. Then yes its the thermostat problem. It has to be replaced. ----------------

Then you can get the required parts from online sites like:---
www.repairclinic.com or from searspartsdirect online site.---------This will help.Thanks.Helpmech

SOURCE: GE profile refrig cooling and freezing problem.

NOTE: This
is a multi-solution answer since I don't have all the tech from your question to pinpoint your problem
But the solution is in here generically, if you read and study the solutions very, very carefully.
First I would check cold control. Thats where you turn it off, if your temp is not warm. it can
be defective and not shutting off. If your temp is warm proceed with the following.
I would check the fan in the freezer. Listen to see if it is running
It moves air to the ref from the freezer
Then check to see if FREEZER CONTROL is turned WARMER WHICH MAKES THE REF COLDER AND VICE-VERSA. SEE?
The ref. temp should be about 33-35
The Freezer temp should be 0 to 10 Any thing below these temps is overkill and a waste of elect
The higher the number you turn it up to is the coldest
But is probably a common defrost problem The ice build up
is not being melted by the defrost system. The fan can't blow through the coils into the fridge.
Take out back panel of freezer to check for ice buildup. The coils should be clean.
There are three components to a defrost system- a heater, heater thermostat, and a timer unless you have a defrost electronic card.
Its best handled by a Technician but you could possibly do it by taking your model number to the nearest appliance parts store and asking for the parts. They are mostly located in freezer ,behind back panel on freezer coils.except the card which is usually located in ref The parts store will have info
Also check fan undernearh Ref in the rear
Clean condenser coils underneath
Make sure back cover is on the fridge. Some take them off and throw them away.
make one out of cardboard if its gone, using the holes of the old one.

Freezing in cripsersG.E artica:

Models Affected: All 23 25 27 and 29 cubic foot electronic side-by-side refrigerator units with plastic Liners manufactured in 2001 or later. This includes all Profile- (Arctica and Eterna") models Consumers have called with reports of freezing in the Vegetable (middle) pan or the CustomCool M (bottom) pan , frozen water tank or frozen water filter.Freezing in the pans , a frozen water tank or a frozen water filter is caused by excessive airflow from the vents in the tower.

To eliminate these freezing issues , install kit WR49X10045. Follow the instructions included in the kit.

Damper door broken G.E artica:

Affects all 2001 models produced with "M" as the eight letters in the model i.e.: PSS25SGM with serial date code LA4 , MA4 , RA4 , SA4 , TA4 , VA4 , ZA4 & AD4. Freezing happens when damper door breaks leaving the unit with no control over the very cold air entering fresh food compartment from the freezer.

Replace damper door assy , with new damper door kit WR17X11508.

To verify the damper door is broken , remove the light shield and rear light bulb from the top of the refrigerator. Enter the factory diagnostic mode by pushing all four temperature control buttons at the same time. Perform damper motor test (FZ 1 , FF 0). Press any other button i.e. Custom cool or filter reset to start damper test cycle. Shine flashlight through right hand side opening of light assembly to view movement of damper door. To exit test mode (FZ 1 , FF 6). lf damper door assembly needs to be replaced , pull top two shelves out 2 ". Pull rear tower assembly slightly forward with both hands, move to the left and the right to expose the two screws that secure the duct assembly , also remove both screws that secure the duct to the ceiling. Replace with new damper motor assembly WR17X11508.

GE Side by side Refridgerator (Artica) model PSC25MSTA. Freezer and refer side not cold. Noticed coil under ice maker hot. Did a test on ice maker per GE web site instructions, Tested OK. Noticed cold...

No,what it appears to be isthe evaporator is freezing over and hindering air flow. The water under the ice maker is actually condensation because the ice maker is colder than the cabinet temp. The unit should have an automatic defrost so it appears it is cycleling through yhe defrost. Unless you call out a tech to set the defrost timer, all you can do is unplug it and defrost in its own. Was the door ajar for any period of time? not completely closed? That will also do it because of humidity. The moisture in the air will freeze. The refrigerator side cools from bleed over from the freezer.

Check the back wall of the freezer for a ice buildup.
If ice is there you have a defrost parts issue.
That will cause the temps you report.
Also, check the freezer fan motor.
Is it running?
Also check the condenser fan motor at the compressor. Is it running?

Icemaker not working, freezer not getting cold enough....

Try using an hairdryer or defrosting the unit completely , this often get rid of blockage caused by frozen lines fixing the problem.

The water lines can also be unblocked from dirt using a thin flexible shaft. This after defrosting.

If all that does not fix the problem, then you may need to replace the water valve, the icemaker solenoid, or the whole icemaker assembly.
