Presario 2199us How to switch IDE HD from Priamry to secondary controller - primary will not get out of PIO mode

Thanks for you willingness to help !

I see an entry in BIOS for the controller and it is something like fpio/dma but I cannot navigate to it.

I have tried resetting in manage-IDE controllers-properties-advanced but it won't change to DMA on the primary controller. Meanwhile the secondary controller is in DMA mode - that's why I wanted to switch the HD to that controller. Since it is a laptop I am reluctant to try to take it apart - and cannot be sure it will be switchable in HW. SO I am looking for a SW solution...

    Thanks,

    Nick

Thanks for the response to first posting - but BIOS (which I just updated) does not offer the option to move the HD from the primary to the secondary IDE controller on my Presario 2199US running XP SP3.
Is there a better version of BIOS out there, or is there some other way to change it in SW ? My primary controller is stuck in PIO mode and resetting it in Manage Devices and the registry does not help. The secondary is in DMA so I want to move the brand new HD (I replaced my original) to it the Secondary IDE COntroller to get the better speed.

Yes I think we are on the same page - thanks ! My BIOS (which I just updated) won't let me navigate to the entry for setting the IDE controller. The primary is set to FPIO (or simular). However there is a method to fix it in My Computer - manage- devices-IDE controllers-advanced but setting it there also won't work. I even tried a registry fix offered on another site. All of this is what caused me to coclude that the best thing to do was to just switch controllers. Since it is a laptop I wanted to check for a SW fix before opening the HW on the off chance that the controllers would be HW switchable.

In BIOS boot order; you just switch them.
or
On the motherboard you switch the wires connected to the motherboard.

Sorry amigo, did not read all of your question, missed the PIO part, that's why you got such a crappy answer...so you tried resetting in BIOs correct from PIO to DMA? Cause your real problem is getting out of PIO mode and switching is just a temp fix..let me know if you tried BIOS and I'll guide you from there..

No you're correct you can't change controllers in BIOS, I was hoping you could change the PIO mode to DMA..

But I think there is some miscommunication between us. The controller connection is the actual plug-in for the hard drive cable. There is one controller for your hard drive and another physical controller for your DVD. So if you wanted to switch which device is plugged into which controller then you would have to open the case and switch the cables. This is what I was referring to in my first solution.

In my second solution, I was asking if you can change the PIO mode to DMA mode on the hard drive controller in your BIOS. You may not be able too, some manufacturers made them that way. But that is the normal way to change from PIO to DMA, in the BIOS options of the same controller vs switching cables. Are we on the same page?

Will if there is please let me know :)...cause it is wired to the controller to the HD, so it would be kinda tough to switch data from it...good luck, let me know how it turns out..

How do I make my Acer E661GXM mobo read an IDE primary HDD and a SATA secondary HDD?

I didnt got exactly what ya want ...but I have some idea...
probably it says something like ( at identification on boot ) primary ide controller.....cd/dvd...... secondary ..ide ...hdd...... sata controller hdd....
this is not an issue of which one is primary ans so ....cause those are 2 completely different bus-es ...and the only way to make your ide hdd be read like primary ...its to change the plug with the one from the cd /dvd..drive ..
the rest doesnt matter cause it s a different controller...

Maxtor Internal EIDE hard drive dip switch settings.

I assume you have two IDE controllers? IDE1 and IDE2, I'll try to help, the primary HD needs to have the pin set to primary and the secondary set to slave, if you're running both of these drives off of the same ribbon cable. You may have to go into your BIOS settings and check to make sure the Primary HD is the WD drive.

Go to Control Panel - click on System - Click on Hardware - Click on Device Manager - click on IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller.
Then right click on Primary IDE Chanel - then click on Properties - Then Advance Settings - For the Device 0 in Transfer Mode select DMA if available. Then Click OK.
You can also select DMA for Device 1 too

You have to use both primary IDE ports, HD must be single mode...
IDE1 Primary - Your HD
IDE1 Secondary - Don't use it
IDE2 Primary - Your HD
IDE2 Secondary - Don't use it
Because it was so long ago I don't remember exact details, and it takes time to reconfigure PC...
But if need help let me know, and I will get you step by step instructions...

945GZT-M: HD listed as third IDE master in bios

If the drive is set as Cable Select you are allowing the motherboard to detect where it is on the ribbon cable. If the drive is shown as Primary slave then the drive is on the wrong connector on the ribbon cable. If it is shown as secondary master than the IDE cables on the board need to be switched (primary to secondary, secondary to primary)
