Question about Uniden BC72XLT Handheld Scanner

1 Answer

Scanner is always outputting fuzzy noise

I have a uniden bc72xlt that used to work fine, but now when I turn it on, no matter where I have the squelch set at it broadcasts static fuzz. Is there some easy fix I am missing or is it shot?? Thanks for the help in advance

The volunteers at FixYa don't like to respond to questions like yours because bad news answers often get us bad feedback.

It's difficult, if not impossible to accurately troubleshoot a scanner without a hands-on exam, but at a minimum, the squelch control is likely shot, and the problem could be worse than that. Parts are hard to obtain, and handhelds are difficult to work on. With the cost of repairs going up and the cost of scanners going down, your best bet is probably a new scanner.

Sorry for being the bearer of bad news.

I have a bc60xlt andno matter how i turn the squelch i get the same hiss what happened

The Bearcat Scanner is neat hand held scanner, Is the scanner programed? Depress the WX for weather and see if the weather channel is available. The squelch knob should be turned clockwise and the noise level should decrease (actually you are decreasing the allowable signals to be received). If you get no response from a know frequency, then the squelch pot may need cleaning or replacement may be in order.....Cost for repair at service shop may not be feasible.

Hello ishaull.
Welcome to FixYa.
My name is John, and I will be assisting you with your issue.
You need to turn your SQUELCH back just a little, but not to much.
Just turn it enough so that the noise disappears!
Hope this was helpful. Your Comments and Testimony's are always welcome here.
Thanks for choosing FixYa today and in the future.

I have a Uniden BC72XL scanner and cats knocked it

In your manual, if you have one, if not look it up on the internet. There are ways with all these types of communications, to reset to manufacturer and factory settings at time of new purchase. Then proceed forward in programming.

Unbearable noise after every radio message - squelch doesn't help

Doesn't sound like you're doing anything wrong. Either the scanner is defective or your locale is using some kind of oddball system that's causing the noise. Take it back, show them what it's doing. If possible, try another scanner in the store and see if it does the same thing. You should be entitled to a refund, exchange, or full credit towards a different model . . .

How do i adjust the squlech on my unidenbc12xlt hand held scanner

The actual setting will vary according to the strength of the signals you're receiving, so it may require adjustment as you move around. With the unit scanning, turn the squelch down slowly until scanning stops and you hear a hissing noise. They slowly bring the level up until scanning resumes.

Won't pick anything up (uniden BC72XLT)

Not sure this would be a solution but...
Make sure you don't have the Ch. Locked out so it just skips them..

You may also try and let the scanner sit on one frequency that you know has chatter and see if you receive.

This unit also picks up local weather try that feature and you can tell if you reception is working or not.

Uniden UBC72XLT scanner problem.

The cheapest solution would be to directly program the frequencies that are available in your area, usually this is public information with the exception of high security channels, you can call each location and ask them what frequency they broadcast

Wont get any transmissons

Turn the squelch back until it screams at you and then turn it forward until the radio JUST gets quiet. If you have over squelched, you will also block the signals.

Bc72xlt-no audio/sound/ kids pressing buttons then no sound

The best I can tell you is try readjusting the volume and squelch again. Turn your volume up then adjust the squelch all the way one way and then all the way the other way. At one of the max settings you should get static noise. This should allow you to see if there is any noise coming out of the scanner.

If you get noise then recheck to see that the scanner is programmed correctly. If it has no frequencies or frequencies with no traffic on them, you will not hear them.

If there was no audio with the squelch then you may want to consider that there is a bigger problem. Page 53 in your manual describes how to reset your scanner. This might work as a last ditch effort. You will lose all of your current programming though.

Hope this helps
