Did you go into set up and define the external hard drive? Lots of Asus boards automatically pick up internal hard drives but have problems with external ones. It could be the cable you are using too.

I would start by swopping the Internal Sata Cables around and check if that solved it.

If not then there's probably a problem with either the E Sata HDD Controller board or Even the HDD or the Sata cable going from the Motherboard to your input E Sata Port. It's a matter of elimination.

So Remove the HDD from the Enclosure and plug it directly into the Motherboard and see if thats picked up.If it is then the HDD is fine.If not, get it replaced and it might still be under warranty.Check with the manufacturer.Continue reading if the HDD is fine.

Then use the Sata Cable from another HDD and connect it straight to to the E Sata Enclosure and see if the Operating System picks it up,Make sure the HDD you removed is plugged back into the enclosure. If that doesn't work then the problem lies with the Enclosure itself and you should get it replaced.

If it does the the problem lies with the cable itself and you should replce that.

Hope this helps you out.

Check your AHCI (or ACHI, can't remember) settings in your BIOS. Turn them off, use "standard pata mode" even though you're using a SATA drive, and try again.

Astone External Closure - Esata Troubles

Thank you for your question.

I will refer you to a previous excellent answer on Fixya by "map9966" on reducing the specifications of your SATA which I also suspect is of 2.0 genre.
http://www.fixya.com/support/t775563-system_won_t_recognize_sata_drive

On the next link you can download the manual for your motherboard which on Page 2 states that there is "complaints" with SATA drives on this board.

You need to research downgrading the "specs" of the Hard Drive you are using in the external enclosure.

Kind regards

Could you please take a moment to vote for both answers, it assists us in knowing that our answers are on track.

Are you using eSATA for the External or USB. If it is eSATA you may need to get the respective drivers for your motherboard for it.
