The heating does not always come on even when the light is on. When the program is set, the heating often only comes on for an hour - then it switches off, but the light stays on. Is this something wrong with the system or something I am doing?

The microwave has a short. You need to replace it, there's no real fix for it. Keep it unplugged and dispose of it. It will eventually catch on fire, and this isn't an exaggeration.
I followed a comment from a previous source and reversed the polarity of the batteries. I then flipped them back to the correct position and the flashing battery indicator went away and the thermostat functions correctly.
Make sure fan relay is wired correctly (G) wire. Ensure the fan on therm is not on, it should be on Auto or off.
If your furnace is short cycling because it has to keep heating your home, the delay in the control board may be staying on to compensate for the exchangers getting hot. If it heats normally, then put your attention to your thermostat.
Set the heating system on aux heat only. Fan should not be on, if it does stay on after a heating cycle, see if the furnace is heating normally, and reaching temp as desired before the heat comes off. Then check the therm wiring, pull the face of the therm, disconnect green wire (fan) and try the heating again.
fault is the circular element found the fan. take back plate off inside oven and element is exposed. often but not always, you can see the damage to the element. element is easy to replace - usually held in by 2 - 7mm nuts on posts from the element base plate
