if your unit only uses one cord ( USB ) for data and
power , the unit side may be damaged , the life span
of the USB hubs and the cords that use them are not known sometimes for no reason whatsoever they stop
working , and is the most common reason for hard
ware to malfunction , and it is possible to replace
the outer closure , remove the HDD you can find
a suitable replacement closure at radio shack for
40$ that allows you to hook up a 2.5 SATA HDD
to any computer Gigaware makes a very nice
portable model , if the HDD works then you have
just trouble shot the closure to the HDD .

The format of your external drive is most likely NTFS which is used by Vista and Windows 7. At best the latest OS X can only read NTFS format with care..
You best bet is to put the data on dvd - r or (i prefer for DVD archiving) + r since you'll be able to port that to anywhere. Alternatively, after saving the data to an interim PC, reformat to FAT. Note FAT can only address 32 GB. so you might need to divide it into multiple partitions.
I hope this helps or you found out differently.

The "My Pictures" folder is a "child" folder of the "My Documents" folder.
Is there an option to "include sub-folders" when using the software to perform the backup?

the usb ports on your laptop may have insufficient power to operate the drive, you could try a double usb cable, it has a mini usb at one end and two normal usb at the other, so it shares the power from two ports.

try right clicking and going to the properties and and reset the permissions of the drive. some times the user account will be write protected and the default hidden admin account will have full access.
