Google is gone is a pain. You need to go to your browser settings>preferences and set google as the default search engine again. Also check under your list of installed programs (under control panel) for anything with the word "Ask" and get rid of it!

I used to have google chrome as my search engine but now it keeps getting mugged by "ask jeeves" or babylon search. How can I get rid of these and go back to what I had before?

This may happen when you install new freeware software e.t.c. and it installs their affiliated search engine on your browser e.t.c

To change it back to follow these steps
1) Open chrome
2) Click the spanner icon in the top right (settings)
3) Scroll down and click options
4) The options screen should appear, the second to last option is what you need to change.

From here click "Manage search engines" and Google as default

If its the home page or new tab, you can manage all this on the same page.

I have always used Google. I do not want Ask Jeeves, but have acquired it no doubt when doing something else. I now want it off my screen permanently

Sometimes deleting Ask program from Program files doesnt get rid of it.
If you are using Chrome, go Settings menu (icon of 3 lines on the right of the search bar) and select your Search Engine preference under Search
