Question about Dryers

1 Answer

I have a Whirlpool Cabrio model #WED6200SW1. The control panel turns on and when I hit start the heating element heats but it will not start. There is a slight humming noise but I can't tell if it's coming from the motor or the heating element. We opened it up and vacuumed out all of the lint away from the motor and took off the belt and got the same results. Could this be a door or thermal fuse? Or since it is still heating is it most likely the motor?

The humming noise indicates the motor is either trying to run, but not doing so because of a bad motor or capacitor, or the motor IS running but cannot spin the drum because the drive belt is off/broken. If you can spin the drum easily by hand, the belt is probably the problem.

SOURCE: Whirlpool LER5644A No heat and motor wont Turn

Replace the dryer wires.
Put your meter leads into the 4&5 slots.
Make sure the door switch is closed or jumpered.
Push the start button.
If you read no voltage the issue is with the wiring, the timer, or a relay.

SOURCE: Dryer not heating

There is at least one thermal cut off switch.
It is a two terminal device usually mounted near the heating element or in/near where the hot air exhaust leaves the dryer.

It should be closed (shorted) all of the time. It should ONLY open when dryer overheats. Check it with an ohm meter with AC power disconnected. It should be a short. If open replace it.

You can also check it with power connected but you must be VERY VERY CAREFUL !!
Connect an AC voltmeter set to read 250 VAC across the switch.
Run the the dryer.
It should measure zero VAC.
If the switch opens it will measure about 220 VAC.
If it opens when it has not overheated, replace the switch.

Start from about 0:50 seconds and watch how to remove the lower panel. Yours will be the same.
This has the parts breakdown to help you out from there. You most likely have a bad heating element.
This one will show you how to test several different components for heating issues. Yours will be mostly the same. Start at 0:50 and this will help you diagnose the heating element and limit switches.

hay Aric , it sounds like you have bad element or fuse . test as follows unplug wires to the element and turn unit on if you get 120v to the element replace it if no power then it got to be a fuse or the door switch test them for continuity , good luck APPLIANCES R EN

Our Whirlpool Cabrio Elecetric dryer will not start. Model is WED6200SW1. We had just finsihed drying a load and put a 2nd load in, but it won't start. All the light come on. Could it be a sensor...

it could be that or it could be the start button, you can check the button by adding a jumper in the wires that go to it,, this should be done as a check and not left that way,, for safety

Whirlpool Cabrio - How do I tell if my heating

If you are comfortable useing a volt meter and a ohm meter I can walk you throught the steps otherwise you need to call a repairman, If you are not getting any heat and the tumbler is turning it is possible the element is bad again only a test meter can tell for sure or you can take the dryer apart and look at the element to see if it is broken make sure the power is turned off at the breaker first also unplug the dryer.

Whirlpool Cabrio electric dryer

ctwoods, this sounds like the heating element has shorted to the heater can. What that is doing is leaving the element at 1/2 power on all the time. If this happened, then the heat kept going up until it blew the thermal fuse which caused the motor not to run. So check the heater and any fuses in the dryer. You can go to Service Matters for Whirlpool Service Manuals on this model.
