I have found that the switch activated by the door close or turns on the interior light when open on is likely the problem. You may notice that if the door is open and you push the start button, it will buzz. So if the door is closed and you get this buzz when pushing the start button, there is a problem with the door switch. The start button "thinks" the door is open, and therefore not start. The defective door switch needs to be replaced. At least highly likely.

That's because the door switch isn't getting pushed when you're closing the dryer door for some reason or another. Its located at the top of the door. Try pushing the switch by hand and seeing if the light shuts off when you manually push it.

Check door switch connection and operation.
If the door switch is part of the door lock mechanism, within the door itself, then remove door panel, disconnect the mechanism's electrical connector and re-check that the interior light no longer comes on with that door ajar. If it doesn't, then you likely have a faulty door lock mechanism, which you will have to replace.
This faulty switch will also have the affect on your random central locking function.

This is not likely connected to the engine performance issue.

1999 mercury villager interior light won't go off.

If the door adjar light is on than you have a bad door switch. They are part of the door latch assembly. It is more common for the drivers side to go bad but it could be anny of them. A scan tool would be helpful in narrowing down which one it is. What you can try is spraying carb or brake cleaner into the part of the door that holds the door shut (the latch). Spray it into every nook and crany in that area. Open and close the door several times will a serving the door adjar light. If it goes out problem solved. If it doesn't go out get it scanned to see which one has failed and then pull that door pannel to inspect. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Door Ajar message comes up even when all of the stores are shut. Interior Lights and Lights on side view mirrors stay on. Lights can be shut off but the Door Ajdar message remains on.

I have this same problem. A mechanic friend told me that basically the grease they use to grease the door latches cause a sensor to think the door is open. He said to buy something thtat will break up this stuck grease, but also has lubricating effects. I forgot what he told me to buy though.

Message center says driver door ajar but shut tight

this problem is caused by a small switch inside the door that is attached to the door latch mechanism, it is called a door ajar/coutresy light switch, there are one of these for each door, the dealer can run a test that will id the bad switch very quickly, the output from these switches goes through a control called a lighting control module (LCM), it has the ability to test itself.
