Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Water won't pump to the ice maker.

We have a 1987 or 88 Whirlpool Fridge/Freezer and we are having a problem with getting water up the hose to dump into the ice maker. It goes from the water source to the fridge but then it stops. Is there a primer button, or reset button we need to push? The ice maker has been out of commission for a while and now it doesnt' work. Thanks for your help!

What would you suggest I do to test this theory of not getting power - and yes its plugged into the wall! Is there a fuse or reset button on the solenoid valve mechanism?

    Yes I have a voltmeter.

No button to push. It sounds like the solenoid valve which opens to fill the ice tray is not working. Not getting power, stuck, faulty.

Well, first you'll have to find it. It should be at the back of the icemaker. You'll need a voltmeter, do you have one?

  • Samuel Charles Spriggs May 08, 2009

You need to put the voltmeter probes across the solenoid valve leads. No need to disconnect them unless you have to to get to them. Test for 120 volts AC when the icemaker bail is in the fill position. Potential electrical shock -- be very careful.

I have slimey, flaky sediment at the bottom of my glass of ice water. The water side is clear. I have a Whirlpool refrigerator with filter at bottom of freezer side. What can I do?

Your ice maker has a type of mold in it. Dump the ice turn off the water to the ice maker and let the ice maker clear the ice in it. Then get a spray bottle, put a little laundry liquid bleach and water in it and spray the tray where the ice cubes are made. . Let it sit for 10 or so minutes.then turn back on the water and let the ice maker go thru several cycles, dump that ice and then you're good to go.

WAS IT LEAKING FROM INSIDE THE FREEZER OR FROM BOTTOM OF FRIDGE? ONCE IN A WHILE YOU NEED TO TAKE OUT THE ICE BIN AND DUMP ICE OUT AND CLEAN IT. HOW CAN THE ICE MACHINE OVERFLOW WITH ICE WHEN THE ICE IN THE TRAY WON'T BUDGE? NEED CLARIFICATION. SOUNDS LIKE YOU EITHER HAVE A BAD ICE MAKER MODULE OR THE SOLENOID FOR THE ICE ON THE WATER VALVE IS BAD.

Have you tried raising the arm of the ice maker and leaving it for awhile then push it back down and see if it will work? Should be a cover that is over the plug take the cover off and unplug the ice maker, shouldn't be that hard to take off. I believe you have to squeeze the top and bottom together to remove it but Im not positive.

No ice

Pour about 1/2 cup of water into icemaker . If it freezes and dumps , the water valve is bad ( where the wall water line connects to the fridge ) . If it freezes and does not dump and the ice stays in the icemaker , replace the icemaker . Also check the fill tube ( the tube going from the freezer wall to the icemaker itself ) to see if it has frozen closed . If it has , the water valve is not closing completely , and letting a drop thru and freezing in the tube . Also an indication of a bad water valve .

Kenmore fridge ice maker

This is the ice maker that is the problem. The ice maker is controlled by an electric solenoid valve in the rear of the frig. Over time they have a tendency to become corroded by the chemicals in the water and will cause undesired operation of the components. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Ice maker not dumping as frequently and cubes freezing one large chunk

The first thing I would check is the cleanliness of the condenser coil under the fridge. Make sure the fan under there is running, and that the coil is clear of dust. The ice maker requires 15 degrees for a period of time before it will make ice and dump. If the temp in the freezer is colder than this, then it is likely the ice maker needs replaced. They can be replaced fairly easily with just a couple tools. (1/4" nut driver and a flat screw driver). There is a plug where it plugs into the freezer side wall, and a bent tube that supplies water to the tray. If not sure what to do, have a service tech look at it.

Water leak where hose meets refrigerator connector

I had a similar problem several years ago with water leaking on the floor at behind the fridge. Turned out to be the gasket at a connection the same size as a garden hose at the water valve, so I used a garden hose washer and that did the trick. That was on a Whirlpool vintage about 1990. Can't say what the model was.
