What size drive is in it now? The user manual should tell you what size drive it can use. If you are not sure, the best thing to do is to go back with the same size. The brand does not matter. Is your hard drive IDE or SATA? What is the model of your laptop?

SOURCE: My Acer Aspire 5100 Laptop wont detect the hard drive

If it works on another computer then either the ide cable in the acer is bad/loose at either end or the ide controller on the motherboard is bad. I would try a known good ide cable first as if this is the problem it is fixable alot cheaper than a motherboard. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: need to replace acer aspire 5314 hard drive.

You need a 2.5" 150 Gigabyte drive; however, those laptops are prone to a short in the serial connection from the motherboard. This is an almost impossible task for an novice user to change a motherboard and the cost is not worth it. I installed a new hard drive and although the laptop recognized it, it still will not recognize it and load the operating system. Tested drive on another laptop and it works flawless. The hard drive became bad from the short which you can sometimes hit the bottom of the unit and make it work long enough to backup the data.

SOURCE: How to replace Acer Aspire 5630 Hard Drive

The link below gives you the user manual. On the computer views is the base view which will show you the correct bay on the bottom of the computer. You will loosed the screws to that bay, remove the cover andl you will see the hard drive. Althought I have not removed this particular laptop hard drive, these drives usually pull up or back using a tab provided. The hard drive will probably have a cradle the actual drive is connected to. You will have to removed the old drive from this cradle and put the new drive back on the cradle exactly the way the old drive was attached,

I hope that this information helps and gives you a place to start solving your issue.

How do I change the bios settings to boot from a dvd to down grade from windows 8 to windows 7 please.

Hi
To activate the BIOS utility, press <F2> during the POST while the
computer logo is being displayed.
To set the boot sequence in the BIOS utility, activate the BIOS utility, then select Boot from the categories listed at the top of the screen.
You can then choose the order in which the BIOS seeks bootable media. For your purposes the optical drive needs to be the first option. Do remember that during the boot sequence there are only about 5 seconds where it will say "Press any key to boot from CD......" after which it will revert to booting from the hard drive.
If you go to this site,
Drivers and Manuals
you can choose your model from the options lists and can then download drivers and documents which you may need after your downgrade.
Hope this is helpful, if so would you please register that with Fixya
Cheers

How do I remove a bios password and hard drive password from an Acer 3050 laptop?

juan_perez_m, I would like you to download the Service Manual, for the Acer Aspire 3050 series of laptops,

http://www.tim.id.au/blog/tims-laptop-service-manuals/

On this page you can go to the Right side, and click on Acer, or scroll down the page to the heading - Acer.

In the paragraph(?) that starts with Aspire 1200, go down to the second line.
Scroll across to 3050, and Left-click on it.
(Fifteenth one over)

This is a PDF file. Give it a few seconds to see the first page, and additional time to fully download.
(Advise letting the file download all the way before looking through it.
Watch the Download Progress bar)

Once the file has fully downloaded, go to Page 105 shown in the PDF page number box.

(The page number box is in the top header, to the right of the blue Down Arrow.

Instead of using the Down Arrow to go to Page 105, you can left-click once in the page number box, type 105, and press the Enter key.
Much faster.

Ignore if you are already aware)

Clear BIOS Password Procedures.
G1 is the clear BIOS password jumper.

Yessir, you have to disassemble the laptop, in order to access this jumper.
It's a method to help prevent thievery.

Don't forget to observe Anti-Static Precautions before, and during disassembly.

If what I have stated sounds like a foreign language to you, come back in a Comment, and we'll work together on the procedure.

Regards,
joecoolvette
