My lcd tv has a problem. it had a problem when cold & when bright scenes came on screen, the picture would FLASH. it gradually got worse so i turned down the brightness a little. but now i have no picture at all, but do have the screen backlights on & the sound. its like a huge wall mounted radio now. great. it is out of warranty as well.. anyone know whats wrong please? ive been told it could be the inverter, psu or main board, which should i look at first? many thanks.

Sounds like you have a backlight problem. To verify this, turn on the set, dim the lights in the room, and shine a bright flashlight on the screen. If you see a faint picture you have a backlight fault. It could be as simple as a bad capacitor in the power supply, or a faulty inverter board, or in rare cases a bad backlamp.
It could be a main board, but it could be a backlight problem. To verify this, turn on the set, dim the lights in the room, shine a bright flashlight on the screen. If you see a faint picture, you have a backlight problem.
oh, so that's your problem. I'm willing to bet you have a picture but just no backlight. Now does the screen come on briefly when you first turn the TV on? Or is the screen black at all times?? Turn on the TV, turn off the lights in the room. Take a very bright flash light and shine it one the screen.I bet you see a dim picture. It sounds like you have a backlight problem. Either you are missing 24VDC from the power supply, 3.3VDC "backlight on" signal from the main board, a bad inverter, or a bad backlamp.
Hi, while fixing another persons lcd tv i used lower rated power supply to try to fire up the tv ( picture-no sound) the bulbs ( actually cold cathode fluorescent ) lit up but only halfway. So sounds like the power supply for your backlight has gotten weak. You may try a workaround I've used on personal equipment, try turning down brightness on tv-this may,if your lucky, even out the brightness. hope this helped. Prodzilla
Shine a small bright light at the screen when on and see if you can see a faint picture in the dark screen. If you can then your backlighting is not functioning due to ccfl (inverter), power supply, or back light lamps.
If you've tried the backlight and brightness from the menu, you may have a more serious problem. Try this;
Take a bright flashlight and place it against the LCD screen. See if you can see an image around the edge of the flashlight. If you see an image, you probably have one of three problems;
1) The inverter board is bad.
2) CCFT (cold cathode fluorescent light(s)) are dead 3) Power supply to inverter board is bad.
