Almost exactly as you typed it:

9 + ( 8 +/- 4 ) y^x 2 =

+/- is just to the right of the decimal point, y^x is just above the divide.

Most likely problem with the browser. Try downloading Firefox or Google Chrome from http://google.com/chrome. If it works from there, then try resetting the settings to the default under Advanced IE settings.

When you upgraded to Internet Explorer 9, it made a backup of Internet Explorer 8 and replaced it. If you are running windows xp you would have had the Beta release of IE 9, as the full blown release will not run on xp. It was designed only for Vista or Windows 7.

In order to get IE 8 back, you will need to go to Start > Control Panel and look for the option to Uninstall or Change Programs or the Icon for Programs and Features if in icon view. Once the list of programs loads, look for Internet Explorer 9 and then highlight it and click Uninstall at the top of the screen. It will remove the new version and replace it with your previous version. You will need to reboot the machine when it is finished.

Once back up and running you should have IE 8 back in place and fully functional.

The 30XA only has logarithm functions for base e and base 10. However, you can calculate the logarithm to any base by using the relationship logb x = log x / log b = ln x / ln b

To calculate log3 of 9, press

9 LOG / 3 LOG =

or

9 LN / 3 LN =

It might actually help to identify your calculator (make and model number). Your calculator is trying to solve an equation. So it is prompting you to enter the value of the parameter a. All you have to do is enter the value of a, press enter or =, enter the values of the other parameters to obtain your solution. Follow the calculator prompts. YOU alone know what problem you are trying to solve.

If you have any doubt about what you are supposed to be doing read the manual of your anonymous calculator.

You can enter combinations and permutations.

If the order of the selection matters (ie. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place out of 40 contestants) use permutation. Enter:

40{shift}{nPr}3 and then [=] for your answer set (=59280 possible ways).

IF order doesn not matter (ie. a team of 3 from 40 possible members) then it is a combination. Do the same as above, but substitute {nCr} for {nPr}. (= 9880 possible ways).

For your question: a three-digit set, selecting from 0-9. There is no specified order, it is a combination. The total n=10 (there are 10 digits in the range 0-9) and you are selecting 3.

so.... 10[nCr]3 with give the number of possible combinations.
